Jose Mourinho may have reiterated that Mata adds something to the Chelsea squad that nobody else does but he benched him against Hull and gave him just over an hour against Aston Villa, instead opting for a trio of Oscar/Hazard/De Bruyne to great effect against Hull.
It would be a surprising move of Mourinho to let Chelsea’s double Player of the Year winner Mata to leave but if it is a possibility, United should jump at the chance.
The big question would be whether Rooney would go in the other direction. Mourinho has already confirmed that they are going to go in with a third bid next week despite United standing firm so far that Rooney is not for sale at any price.
Would United be interested in a Rooney swap deal with Mata? Given how impressive the Spaniard has been in the past two seasons, it would certainly be a signing that would strengthen the squad but would it be enough to replace Rooney?
On paper, Chelsea would be mad to let their best player join United but with their interest in Rooney growing ever stronger, we may be about to let one of our best players join them, so stranger things have happened.
