Loan highlightsIt was a relatively quiet weekend for those Chelsea players out on loan to other English clubs, but there was slightly more joy for some of those further afield.
Romelu Lukaku played all but the last few minutes of Everton's goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park, and the Belgian striker was involved in a nasty, accidental collision with Hugo Lloris late on as the pair challenged for the ball. Lloris continued, but Lukaku was replaced soon after due to injury.
Over in Spain, meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois [pictured above] kept a clean sheet as Atletico Madrid maintained their pursuit of leaders Barcelona with a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.
Diego Simeone's side are four points off the pace-setters and two points ahead of Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid who currently occupy third place in the table.
Oriol Romeu was an unused substitute as Valencia ended a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory away at Getafe.
There was plenty of Chelsea interest as Vitesse Arnhem secured a memorable 1-0 away win against Ajax in the Eredivisie courtesy of a 90th-minute goal. Patrick van Aanholt, Lucas Piazon and Christian Atsu all started for the visitors, with both Sam Hutchinson and Gael Kakuta coming off the bench during the second half.
It was a victory which leaves them in second place, only a point behind AZ Alkmaar.
Kakuta netted a midweek brace in Vitesse's 5-0 cup win over Noordwijk, a game which also saw Hutchinson make his debut for the club, completing just over an hour before being substituted.
In Belgium, after laying on his side's first goal, Thorgan Hazard scored their second - his ninth of the season - in Zulte Waregem's 3-2 win over Gent.
Champions League oppositionSchalke warmed up for our midweek Champions League clash with a 2-0 away win at Hertha Berlin courtesy of goals from Adam Szalai and Julian Draxler, a win which lifts them up to fifth in the Bundesliga table.
Elsewhere, Steaua Bucharest came from behind to earn a point with a 1-1 draw at Corona Brasov. The home side had taken the lead courtesy of an own-goal by Lukasz Szukala, but the visitors equalised in the 70th minute through Nicolae Stanciu.
Our other Group E opponents, Basel, required a last-gasp Marco Streller leveller to earn a 1-1 draw at Aarau, although they remain two points clear at the top of the table.
The Chelsea week aheadIt's another busy week for Jose Mourinho's side, with two games on the horizon, although both take place at Stamford Bridge, where we have a fine record so far this season.
On Tuesday at 12.30pm, the Portuguese and one of his players will address the media at Cobham ahead of the following night's Champions League game against Schalke.
On Wednesday afternoon, our Under-19s will take on their Schalke counterparts at Aldershot Town in the UEFA Youth League, with Dermot Drummy's side looking to preserve their 100 per cent record in the competition to date. A win for the Blues would ensure our progression to the knockout stages of the competition. The game kicks off at 3pm and admission is free for all spectators.
Then, on Friday, Mourinho will conduct his usual weekly press conference ahead of Saturday's game against West Bromwich Albion, where he will face Steve Clarke, a man who worked under him during his first spell at the club.
The Under-21s and Under-18s are not in action this weekend.
