Five more clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, can secure their berths in the last 16 of the Champions League in their fourth round of games on Wednesday.
AFP Sports looks at the fixtures in Groups E, F, G and H (kick-offs 1945 GMT):
Group E
MANCHESTER CITY v CSKA MOSCOW
Fresh from Sunday's victory in the Manchester derby, City entertain the Russian champions still looking for a first win in Group E. Manuel Pellegrini's side threw away a two-goal lead away to CSKA two weeks ago and desperately need three points this time to boost their chances of reaching the last 16 for the second season running. City, who beat CSKA 5-2 at home last season, will hope that Sergio Aguero can continue the superb form which has seen him score nine times in his last eight outings. CSKA slipped seven points off the pace at the top of the Russian Premier League at the weekend when they lost 1-0 at home to leaders Zenit. Swede Rasmus Elm and Kirill Panchenko are on the sidelines for the visitors.
BAYERN MUNICH V ROMA
After their extraordinary 7-1 win away to Roma two weeks ago which marked their biggest away victory in Europe and equalled Roma's worst continental defeat, few would bet against Bayern coming out on top as the teams clash again. Having won all three Group E games so far, the German champions will guarantee their place in the last 16 with a win, while a draw would also be enough if the other game also ends in a stalemate. Pep Guardiola's side came from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and are now undefeated in 15 matches. However, Juan Bernat warned: "The first game was perfect for us, it was a crazy game, but now things start again at zero. It will be difficult and very competitive."
Bayern are still without Thiago Alcantara, Pepe Reina, Javi Martinez, Holger Badstuber and Bastian Schweinsteiger, although the latter is nearing a comeback from a knee problem. Roma have won just one of their last four games and were beaten 2-0 at Napoli in Serie A on Saturday. Rudi Garcia's men would take a huge step towards a place in the last 16 if they managed to come away from Bavaria with three points though.
Group F
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN V Apoel
Paris Saint-Germain will be through to the knockout phase for the third season running if they manage to beat Apoel at the Parc des Princes and Ajax fail to win at home to Barcelona. The French champions have raised their game in Europe in recent times, but on this occasion they could be forgiven for having one eye on Sunday's crucial Ligue 1 fixture with Marseille, whom they trail by four points at the top of the table. PSG are unbeaten in their last 30 home European games but toiled before defeating Apoel 1-0 in Cyprus a fortnight ago, Edinson Cavani netting a late winner. Laurent Blanc's side have yet to lose this season, despite being without talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic since late September due to a nagging heel problem. Apoel return to France for the first time since their last-16 win against Lyon in 2012.
AJAX V BARCELONA
Barcelona will guarantee their place in the last 16 if they win in Amsterdam or if they draw and Apoel do not win in France. However, the Catalans will be wary after losing 2-1 at Ajax in the group stage last season and confidence is fragile as they head to the Netherlands having suffered consecutive defeats in La Liga. Saturday saw a 1-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo, and midfielder Sergio Busquets said: "We need to improve and we are working on it. I hope we can end this bad run on Wednesday."
The game against the Dutch champions is set to see Luis Suarez make his Champions League debut for Barca against the club where he initially made his name in Europe. The Uruguayan scored 111 goals during a four-year spell with Ajax before moving to Liverpool in 2011.
Group G
SPORTING V SCHALKE 04
Schalke could take themselves to within touching distance of last-16 berth with a victory in Lisbon. The Portuguese club are bottom of Group G with just one point to their name, although they were rather unlucky to go down 4-3 to Schalke in Germany two weeks ago, when they lost to a stoppage-time penalty after playing much of the game with 10 men. Mauricio is banned after his red card in Gelsenkirchen and Sporting's morale was damaged by a 3-0 weekend reverse to Vitoria Guimaraes. Schalke, meanwhile, have won three of their four games since Roberto di Matteo took over as coach from the sacked Jens Keller. They are hoping to have Kevin-Prince Boateng available to play at the Estadio Jose Alvalade but Julian Draxler is out until the end of the year with a thigh injury picked up at the weekend.
MARIBOR V CHELSEA
Unbeaten this season and flying high atop the Premier League, Chelsea will be through to the last 16 with two matches to spare in Group G if they beat Maribor in Slovenia and Sporting fail to beat Schalke. Few would bet against Jose Mourinho's side recording another win in Maribor after beating the same team 6-0 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago to claim their biggest victory in the competition. It remains to be seen if Diego Costa, who has been managing a hamstring problem, will start here or if Mourinho will be tempted to keep his star striker fresh for the weekend clash with Liverpool. Loic Remy is missing for the visitors. Maribor did not warm up for this encounter in the best manner, losing 1-0 at home to leaders Domzale at the weekend to lie fourth in the 10-team Slovenian top flight.
Group H
SHAKHTAR DONETSK V BATE BORISOV
After recording their record European win by beating BATE 7-0 in Belarus two weeks ago, Shakhtar will be hoping for more of the same as they host the same opponents at their temporary base in Lviv. BATE suffered their worst European defeat in that match as Brazilian forward Luiz Adriano became just the second player to score five goals in a Champions League match. A victory here would leave them on the brink of the last 16, although they come into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to city rivals Metalurh while BATE set a new record of 28 domestic league games unbeaten at the weekend. Clearly, though, there is a large gulf between the level of the Belarusian championship and the Champions League.
ATHLETIC BILBAO V FC PORTO
Two-time winners Porto will secure their place in the last 16 by winning away to Athletic Bilbao, as long as BATE lose in the group's other match. Athletic, in contrast, will be eliminated if they lose and Shakhtar win. The Portuguese club beat Athletic 2-1 in the reverse fixture and are still unbeaten in their domestic league. Athletic, meanwhile, have picked up after a dreadful run of form, with Sunday's 1-0 success against Sevilla their second on the bounce in La Liga. However, Aritz Aduriz, their matchwinner against Sevilla, is out injured here.
