The Mozambique football season gets underway on Saturday with plenty at stake after sponsors mcel announced a $200 000 sponsorship package for the League Mozambique Football (LMF).
LMF and mcel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Maputo during the week as the league starts with a Maputo derby between Costa del Sol and defending champions Sports League (formerly Liga Desportivo de Maputo and Liga Desportivo de Muculmana).
Mozambican newspaper Journal Noticias reported that the renewal extends the sponsorship that has spanned 11 years with mcel, whose commercial director Claudio Chiche is excited.
"We are pleased with mcel to maintain a relationship with the LMF, an institution of recognised merit in the Mozambican sports environment, the way it has managed the sport, in this particular case football," Chiche is quoted as saying.
LMF president, Alberto Simango Junior, in turn, reaffirmed their commitment to manage the money prudently. The Moçambola games will officially kick off with a ceremony in Vilanculos, Inhambane Province.
"We started the relationship with this prestigious company, continuously since 2004. In 2004 sponsorships were around $ 50,000 and are now about 200 thousand. This is gratifying for us," Simango is quoted as saying.
