One of South Africa’s most renowned singing group, the Drakensburg Boys Choir have been afforded, a once in life time opportunity, to be part of the Coca-Cola global anthem, which will be an integral part of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil. The celebrated choir will serenade the South African version of the Coca-Cola anthem at a glittering ceremony, attended by dignitaries and celebrities from across the country when the Fifa World Cup Trophy lands at Lanseria Airport on 1 December 2013.
The iconic trophy will return to South Africa, for the first time since the 2010 Fifa World Cup. As part of the tour organised by Fifa in conjunction with Coca-Cola, the trophy is set to see 88 countries in 267 days before reaching its final destination of Brazil.
Delighted about the opportunity, the choir’s Director of Music, Johan Van Der Sandt said: “we are grateful for the opportunity; it will give the boys great exposure and also adds a bit of variety to their careers”.
“It took us two weeks to grasp the concept. It is such an enjoyable song and because the boys listened to my instructions and added creative input, we were able adapt quickly.”
Of the Choir members, 14 year old Nthato Padi from Johannesburg said: “It will be a “special” feeling singing the Coca-Cola anthem for South Africa. To go through the auditions alone was great and knowing that I’ll be performing the Coca-Cola song for the rest of South Africa is awesome.”
Coca-Cola South Marketing Assets Manager, Malefetsane Mbele says they cannot wait to see the final song that brings a local South African flavour to the global anthem.
“Being part of the Fifa World Cup trophy tour has been great and our partnership with Fifa gives us so many privileges – among them being this experience and only Coca-Cola can bring it to the world. For us to share this with not only the Drakensburg Boys Choir, but South Africa as a whole shows the kind of connectivity we would like to have with the nation.”
“We needed to localise the World Cup song and we thought, the better way was to bring it close to the teens and give them a chance. The creative element of different cultures Drakensburg boys choir have was an interesting mix that we wanted to bring into the song.”
“Our local version will then be integrated into the Coca-Cola World Cup song done by David Correy and Monobloco. We are looking forward to hearing the final product of the localised version of the song,” Mbele said.
South Africa will be an important stop on the world tour with the last World Cup having been staged here. As such the country has been given three days to spend with the trophy before saying a final goodbye as it heads off on its journey towards Brazil.
Football-mad South Africans will have a chance to see and be seen with one of sport’s greatest emblems at the Southgate Shopping Centre in Johannesburg on 2 & 3 December from 11:00 to 19h00. Fans will have an opportunity to have souvenir photos of themselves taken with the trophy, view a special hologram animation showcasing memorable moments of the Fifa World Cup, participate in interactive displays and enjoy other entertainment.
