Andre Ayew has lamented Ghana’s failure to convert their early chances in the 1-2 loss against Senegal on Monday.
The Black Stars, playing in their recently adopted 3-5-2 formation under new coach Avram Grant put up some decent performance in the first half amidst lots of wasted opportunities.
Ayew gave Ghana a first half lead after converting a 14th minute penalty won by Christian Atsu. Senegal stopper Bouna Coundoul had fell the Chelsea attacker in his box.
Senegal who had adopted same tactics in order to neutralise the Black Stars quickly changed their play with the introduction of Lamine Gassama just at the resumption of play for the second half.
The Teranga Lions controlled much of the second half and Mame Biram Diouf’s persistence paid off when his header beat Ghana goalkeeper Braimah for the equaliser. Substitute Moussa Sow finished the business for his side with what was virtually the last kick of the game.
“It was a good first half but the second half was different. If we had converted the two clear chances, it would have been 3-0 and that will not have been the same game, Ayew who captained Ghana said at a post-match press conference.
“Of course I am disappointed with the loss. We showed a beautiful spirit and do not have to put our heads down. I know we have good players and can make good matches. Today, Senegal has had that little bit of luck in the second half that has failed us.
“Gyan is a very important player for us, he is a leader, our captain. He was not there, and those who were there were able to do a good job,” he added.
Ghana play Algeria next on January 23.
