Midfielder-cum-striker and South Africa men’s under-20 national team kingpin, Pule Maraisane, is convinced that this Amajita squad can go all the way and win the Commonwealth Cup currently taking place in St Petersburg, Russia.
The South Africans drew 1-1 with Lithuania in their opening game and followed this with a scintillating 3-1 win over Tajikistan on Sunday to move within a whisker of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the tournament mainly comprising former Soviet Union countries.
Amajita next take on Kazakhstan on Tuesday, knowing a draw will be good enough to top Group C and a place in the last eight.
“We are enjoying our game here and we have managed to even steal the hearts of the neutrals. It would be nice to go all the way and reach the final of this Commonwealth Cup – and even win it,” laughed the talented Maraisane.
The South Africans were cheered by most Russians during their win over Tajikistan and Pule wants to repay the faith shown by the hosts in this team.
The 20-year-old who joined Portuguese second division side Tourizense said he was enjoying his life in Portugal although at times he misses home.
“I am a regular and have really been doing well for myself and the team. I hope to use this as a catalyst for my blossoming career. I want to be a big star.”
Born and bred in the North West town of Klerksdorp, Maraisane said the Commonwealth Cup tournament was a good exercise for the under-20s ahead of the upcoming Caf African Youth tournament scheduled for Senegal in March.
“We are determined to write our own piece of history in Senegal. We don’t want to go there to be among the top four. Why not go there and come back as champions?” he said.
