AS Kigali out to stop in-form APR

Second-placed AS Kigali will be looking to halt APR’s run of good form when they face off in a National Football League encounter this afternoon at the Kigali Regional Stadium.
Eric Nshimiyimana’s side are seven points adrift of the table leaders, who have 38 points after two recent big victories, a 4-0 win over arch-rivals Rayon Sports and a 2-1 win over Mozambique’s Liga Desportiva de Maputo in the preliminary round of the Caf Champions League.
AS Kigali striker Ernest Sugira, who has netted six goals this season, admits that his teammates have to be focused because the army side’s confidence could be the foundation for a difficult tie.
Sugira and teammate Isaie Songa, the league’s top scorer with nine goals, will be up against the league’s strongest defensive partnership that has only conceded seven goals in 16 games.
APR’s captain Ismael ‘Kodo’ Nshutiyamagara who is also a central defender admitted that, “It feels good to have won those two games and for sure our confidence is high but we must not be complacent. This is a different game and we have to win it if we are to retain the league title.”
In the other games of the day, third placed Police FC will host Rwamagana-based Sunrise FC at the Kicukiro stadium in a bid to challenge for second place.
The law enforcers currently have 28 points from 17 games, three behind AS Kigali while victory for Sunrise will send the seventh placed team into fourth position.
Rayon Sports host bottom-placed Isonga FC in Muhanga with the latter seeking their second victory this season. Isonga have managed six draws this season and lost 10 times but head coach Innocent Seninga is optimistic that the youthful side will hit top form soon and avoid relegation.
