Champions Manchester City climbed up to second in the Premier League table with an emphatic 3-0 victory over high-flying Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday.
City felt they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Sergio Aguero in a goalless first half, but Yaya Toure put them in front at the start of the second period.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men when Eliaquim Mangala was sent off for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes remaining, but substitute Frank Lampard eased City's nerves with a clinical strike before Gael Clichy added a third late on.
Victory for City moved them above Southampton with 27 points from 13 games, while Southampton are a point behind.
Tottenham Hotspur host Everton at White Hart Lane later on Sunday.
City had the better of the early exchanges and were denied a clear penalty when Jose Fonte's hefty challenge wiped Aguero out in the box. Incredibly the Argentine, making his 100th Premier League appearance, was booked for diving.
Southampton resisted the City pressure and the visitors had Joe Hart to thank for keeping the scores level when the England goalkeeper kept out Graziano Pelle's miss-hit shot before denying Steven Davis from the follow up.
Back came City once again though, and Stevan Jovetic fired a shot past Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster, only for defender Toby Alderweireld to clear the ball off the line.
Ivorian midfielder Toure, so often City's go-to man on their way to the title last season, put his side in front after 51 minutes when his low shot from the edge of the area flicked off Saints defender Alderweireld and past Forster.
When French defender Mangala received a second yellow for a foul on Shane Long it seemed Southampton had a lifeline but that was snatched away when Lampard ghosted through into space and buried his shot low into the corner after being picked out by James Milner.
Clichy hammered the final nail into Southampton's coffin when he turned the ball home in the 88th minute.
It was Southampton's first home defeat of the season and City's first away win at the Saints since 2003.
