Round 22 of the National First Division was a good one for KwaZulu-Natal teams, while former leaders Jomo Cosmos suffered a blow to their promotion hopes and two teams enjoyed away wins on Sunday.
Golden Arrows retained their place at the top of the log with a 2-0 away win over Garankuwa United at Pilditch Stadium on Saturday, with Andile Fikizolo and veteran striker Mabhuti Khenyeza scoring the goals for Shaun Bartlett’s side.
It was also a good day for Arrows’ fellow KZN team, Thanda Royal Zulu, who moved into second spot on the log thanks to a 3-1 home win over Cape Town All Stars. Amabhubesi are three points off the top, while Jomo Cosmos are two points further back in third after suffering a 3-2 loss away to Santos.
It was a heart-break defeat for Ezenkosi, who fought back from two goals down to restore parity and seemingly secure a share of the spoils against the People’s Team, but Carl Lark’s second goal of the day arrived in injury time to hand the Cape side a thrilling victory that severely dents Cosmos’ promotion hopes.
Another game in Cape Town saw Vasco Da Gama and Milano United draw 1-1 in their bruising derby clash at Parow Park, while Maluti FET College needed a last-gasp goal to secure the same result at home to Black Leopards.
Royal Eagles, meanwhile, returned to winning form in the NFD with a 2-1 home victory over Highlands Park at King Zwelithini Stadium. Walter Maponyane and Thabo Maselwa netted Eagles’ goals, Thando Mdluli scored for the visitors.
Sunday’s action saw FC Cape Town and African Warriors each claim 1-0 away wins over Baroka FC and Witbank Spurs respectively. Siyabonga Madikane netted for FC Cape Town, while Warriors’ goal was scored by former Moroka Swallows midfielder Tsweu Mokoro.
The NFD will go on a break until the first weekend of April due to the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup and the impending Fifa international dates.
