Round 19 of the National First Division saw Thanda Royal Zulu close in on the top two of Golden Arrows and Jomo Cosmos after they were held to draw against African Warriors and FC Cape Town respectively.
Thanda defeated bottom-of-the-log Maluti FET College 2-1 at Umhlathuze Sports Complex thanks to a brace from ‘Ace’ Bhengu, who continues to top the scorers’ chart in the league. This saw the KZN team close to within three points of leaders Golden Arrows, who were held goalless by struggling African Warriors in the Free State.
Jomo Cosmos, meanwhile, almost suffered a defeat away to FC Cape Town after a first-half penalty from Andile Khumalo, but a late Charlton Mashumba goal saw Ezenkosi claim a share of the spoils. Cosmos are second on the log, just one point behind Arrows.
Fourth-placed Cape Town All Stars kept themselves in the running for the title with a 2-1 derby win over Vasco Da Gama on Friday night, keeping them three points adrift of Thanda and a not-insurmountable six from the top spot.
The weekend’s other results saw Black Leopards defeat Witbank Spurs 2-1, Baroka FC claimed a valuable 2-1 victory at Highlands Park to climb into mid-table, Royal Eagles beat Santos 2-1, while Milano United and Garankuwa United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Round 20 will be played this midweek, with seven fixtures on Wednesday afternoon and one on Thursday.
