Free State Stars were pushed all the wire to the wire as they battled to a 4-2 victory over Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Nike Centre in Soweto on Sunday afternoon.
Ea Lla Koto were handed the lead early on, with Aces' Keagan De Klerk left cursing his luck after putting the ball in his own net.
Aces were still reeling from the opening goal when Stars struck again on 12 minutes, Thethani Mbuyiselo bagging their second of the afternoon.
Judas Moseamedi gave Aces a ray of hope when he reduced the deficit in the 70th minute, and their prospects of launching a comeback were further boosted when Mbuyiselo picked up his marching orders just one minute later.
Stars renewed their efforts after being reduced to ten men, restoring their two-goal advantage through Tshepo Mothiba in the 74th minute.
However, there was still more to come from Aces, who reduced the deficit once more through Moseamedi, setting up a tense finish to the encounter.
Despite playing with 10 men, though, Stars went on to net a fourth in the closing stages of the contest, Iwana Tholang slotting home to put the result beyond any doubt.
