Reds triumph at Wembley

Manchester United collected their first trophy of David Moyes’ reign at Wembley on Sunday thanks to a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Community Shield. It was a record 16th outright win for the Reds in the traditional curtain-raiser of the season and the perfect way for Moyes to kick off his tenure. Last season’s Golden Boot winner Robin van Persie took just six minutes to get off the mark for the new campaign with a superb header from 14 yards, created by Patrice Evra’s floated left-wing cross.
Chances were thereafter scarce in the first period although Danny Welbeck's superb turn and shot forced a good reaction save from Scott Carson just before the break.
Carson could do nothing about van Persie’s and United’s second on 59 minutes which effectively ended the game as a contest. A passing move involving Evra, Cleverley and Welbeck culminated in van Persie firing in via a big deflection off James Perch.
Victory was deserved for the Reds, always in control against a Championship side that rarely threatened. United fans will hope this is the first of many trophies to come, this term and beyond.
