Hearts, Kotoko in tricky ties

Sekondi Hassacas will kick off match day 10 of the First Capital Plus Premier League with Hearts of Oak on Saturday.
The Sekondi side unlike in the past seasons, are on the verge of making the Essipong Stadium a fortress this term as they are yet to drop a point at home in four games this season – 12 points with 8 goals scored and conceded 2. They however have a tough nut to crack in the frame of the resurging Accra Hearts of Oak. The Phobians are brimming with confidence from their Caf Confederation campaign as well their last league win over second placed Aduana Stars.
The Dormaa Park will host match day 10’s topliner on Sunday as Aduana Stars welcome leaders AshantiGold. The two sides are separated atop the log by 6 points. The hosts are another of the sides who have won all home games so far – intriguingly, by a one goal score line.
Separated by a point, third placed Heart of Lions (on 15 points) and Academy boys, WAFA SC, will battle for supremacy at the Kpando Park on Sunday. Both sides have shown good encouraging form so far with the Academy side doing their best to prove being the surprise of the season.
With new coach Mohammed Gargo taking charge of his first game, B.A United will be hoping to halt their run of poor results at home to Wa All Stars. The Soccer Apostles are currently bottom of the log with 7 points.
Berekum Chelsea will travel to face New Edubiase United at the Len Clay Stadium while Liberty Professionals host Bechem United at the Carl Reindorf.
Holders Asante Kotoko ahead of their Caf Champions League trip will hope to leave the country on a winning note in a tricky tie with Medeama SC in Kumasi. The visitors are three points better than the porcupine warriors who lie 13th with 10 points.
Great Olympics will be fancying to lift themselves from relegation places as 4th placed Inter Allies come visiting at the Accra Stadium on Sunday.
FCPPL Match day 10 Fixtures:
Sekondi Hasaacas v. Hearts of Oak
Aduana v. AshantiGold
Heart of Lions v. WAFA SC
B.A United v. Wa All Stars
New Edubiase United v. Berekum Chelsea

Kotoko v. Medeama SC

Aba hosts 'friendly foe' in season opener

The new season of the Glo Nigerian Premier League kicks off this weekend and after three months of no League football, the new season could not have come any sooner. Fixtures drawn up few weeks ago has offered us quite an interesting line up of matches but none will be more anticipated than the only derby served up this match day- Enyimba International vs. Akwa United.
A tale of two managers
No time in recent history has this clash been devoid of significance either on or off the pitch and this year's did not disappoint either, it is the clash of two managers Kadiri Ikhana and Zachary Baraje. About this time last year, Baraje had signed with Enyimba after guiding El Kanemi Warriors to a fourth placed finish and he and his new charges were dreaming of what they would achieve in the new season. Kadiri Ikhana on the other hand was sizing up his newly promoted Giwa FC, neither men aware of how things would open up in the new season. Well, in a strange turn of events, Kadiri Ikhana led his team to Aba in June and not only outwitted Baraje but took over his office in the process.
Squeezing Water out of the Rock:
Is managing Enyimba the toughest job in the Glo Nigerian Premier League? The answer is, which is tougher? What makes Enyimba different from every other side is the fact that have the resources to attract better players but honestly there are few better players at a higher technical ability than what can be found at every other club. So what you have is a congregation of players who are slightly better than a lot of others, a healthy monthly pay package and a huge pressure to get not only a Continental ticket but to get a trophy every year.
The main rival is Kano Pillars who are the most organized and best run club in the Championship. With the recent stories of owed payments and player strikes, an Enyimba manager now has an even heavier job of keeping unhappy players motivated; a task equivalent to squeezing water out of a rock. Enyimba's pedigree means that regardless of the problems within the team, fans are already penning down the three points before a football is kicked.
What they have to prove:
As far as Sunday is concerned, all at matters Is the three points. Kadiri Ikhana will want to teach the man in the opposite dugout from his manual, Coaching Enyimba 101. Of course he turned the fortunes of the team around last season but Sunday is about outwitting Baraje one more time to prove to the Enyimba management and fans that they made the right choice picking him.
Ikhana- Mr. Reliable
For Baraje, there is a different kind of pressure. Returning to the grounds were he suffered what could be termed the lowest point in his managerial CV, the prospect of beating Enyimba in Aba will be one he would so relish. His team, Akwa United themselves have barely oozed good news except perhaps the fact that they will play their games this season at the Nest of Champions, Nigeria's current best footballing edifice. His team have lost players who left in search of greener pastures, one of which is Ezekiel Bassey now tutored by Kadiri Ikhana and will be lining up against Akwa United on Sunday.
The Bigger Picture:
Beyond Sunday however, what lies ahead for both coaches is a big big season. Kadiri Ikhana made history with Enyimba 13 years ago and his successor Kano Pillar's handler Okey Emordi used his template and reproduced the feat for Enyimba. Since then, no other Nigerian club has been able to work the magic again. Ikhana wants to do it again and even if he wouldn't, he wants a good run in the Continent. He also knows that his employers want that Premier League title that has eluded the People's elephant for five years now. If any manager can wrench it from Pillars, it is Kadiri Ikhana.
Coach Baraje - looking for revenge or just play spoiler?
For Baraje Akwa United is his first managerial appointment since his dismissal at Enyimba; he is a man seeking redemption. He wants to remind everyone of his almost forgotten exploits with El Kanemi warriors before his sad stint at Enyimba. If he needed a moral boosting appointment, this is it. If he needed a quiet, low pressure job that can give him resources and personnel to show what he is capable of, it is right here before him. Akwa United themselves are in search of answers too especially with myriads of gifted players leaving every season, they believe Baraje can turn things around again. Talk about a marriage made in heaven.
So as each man steps toward his dugout on Sunday, both realize the magnitude of the respective tasks facing them and getting maximum points will be a huge leap in the right direction.

Uche scores winner for Levante

Nigerian attacking midfielder, Kalu Uche scored the winner for Levante on Friday in the 2-1 success over Eibar on match day 26 of the Primera División.
The game decided at Estadio Ciudad de Valencia began in the worst possible fashion for the home side as Saúl Berjón gave the visitors the lead in the 55th minute.
Ten minutes later, Levante were back on level terms as David Barral scored following a moment of brilliance from teammate, Antonio “Toño” Aranda.
Uche then got in on the act in the 67th minute, profiting from keystone cops defending by the Eibar rear guard.
The Nigerian and Barral are fast forming a lethal partnership upfront for Levante as they have provided eight of Les Granotes’ last ten league goals this season.
Uche has scored three goals in six league games for Levante and is underlining his status as a respected marksman in the Liga.
Friday’s win lifts Levante up to 16th in the Liga with 25 points from 26 matches.

Yakubu set to fire Reading to glory

Former Nigeria international striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni says he is looking forward to firing Reading to the final of this year’s FA Cup.
Aiyegbeni scored the first goal of his Reading career in February, notching almost immediately after coming off the bench to seal a 2-1 win at Derby County in the fifth round, marking a dream return after a stint playing in China and Qatar.
The 32-year-old has now set his sights on delivering for the Royals in England’s oldest competition insisting that he will continue to plunder goals as long as he gets regular service.
“I always believe, no matter where I’ve played, that I will always score goals. It’s just down to me to take my chance.
“If I can get the chance of 90 minutes then I will take it. I always believe, I always have confidence and I know I can do it.
“Whenever the manager feels it is right for me to play then I will take my chances,” the 32-year-old told www.thefa.com.
Aiyegbeni shocked more than a few when he decided to return to English football from Qatar but he revealed that he always believed a move was always on the cards.
“I never closed the door on coming back to England. I always believe that in football you should never say never.
“I left here two-and-a-half years ago and then I had to chance to come back here and I took it. For me to be here is great – England is one of the best places to play football,” he said.
And having missed out on a Cup Final appearance with Everton in 2009 through injury, he revealed his burning desire to play at the national stadium.
“Yeah I do, I had the chance to do that with Everton but I was injured when we played against Chelsea.
“Now I have the chance to do it again – if we can go through to play at Wembley then it is going to be great. It would be special. Every player wants to play at Wembley,” he said.
League One side Bradford stand between Yakubu and his Reading team-mates realising their aspirations, and although Steve Clarke’s side may be a division higher, the veteran goalscorer knows it will be no easy task to overcome the Bantams at Valley Parade.
“It’s not going to be easy as we still have a game to play. It’s one game and we could be there (at Wembley), but when you look at the team we are going to play, we know they are a good side and they fight for each other.
“They stick together and make it difficult for any players that play against them.
“So we are not getting carried away, we will give it our best and hopefully we can go through.
“We just need to be calm and ready to go on Saturday. It’s not going to be easy, these guys are giantkillers. They fight for each other and make it so difficult. If we give them chances then they are going to punish us – that’s football.
“They’ve had a good run already, and they have a dream too to play at Wembley, but so do we.
“It’s like a dream come true for the players, win one game and you will be at Wembley, and we will give everything to be there,” he said.

Manu rejects Iheanacho plea

Assistant coach of Nigeria’s U20 team, Nduka Ugbade has sensationally revealed that Manchester City starlet, Kelechi Iheanacho pleaded with head coach, Manu Garba to be included in Nigeria’s final squad for the 2015 Africa U20 championship in Senegal.
Iheanacho was initially ruled out of the competition after picking up an injury which was ratified by the Citizens.
The youngster recovered from the injury before suffering yet another setback but not before asking the coaching staff of the Flying Eagles if he could be drafted into the squad as a late inclusion.
“Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and some of the other players who are not here (in Senegal) actually pleaded with coach Manu if they could be included but he said no because they did not work with us in the final phase of our preparations.
“That is the hunger and desire they all displayed but the coach (Manu) has told them that if we qualify for the U20 World Cup, they will all be invited to fight for shirts,” Ugbade told supersport.com.
Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles have held their first training session in Senegal ahead of their opening game of the competition against the hosts, Senegal.
The team trained on Thursday evening at the Stade Iba Mar Diop, Dakar.
It (the training session) lasted 90 minutes and all 21 players trained fully.
Their last training before the Sunday showdown will take place on Saturday at the Stade Iba Mar Diop.

Galaxy launch MLS season with win

The Los Angeles Galaxy launched their quest to defend their Major League Soccer title with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Friday.
The Galaxy controlled the majority of the first regular-season match, but didn't break through for a goal until Jose Villarreal's 65th-minute strike.
Reigning MLS Most Valuable Player Robbie Keane ensured the win with a goal nine minutes from time.
Villarreal slotted the ball inside the left post after Chicago midfielder Jeff Larentowicz's clearance ricocheted off a teammate.
Keane found the back of the net in the 81st.
Omar Gonzalez chipped the ball into the box to find Baggio Husidic, who nodded the delivery to the centre of the penalty area. Keane pounced on the loose ball and unleashed a shot.
For the Galaxy, the match marked the start of their post-Landon Donovan era.
Donovan, the all-time leading scorer for both the United States and in Major League Soccer, retired following the MLS Cup victory three months ago over New England.
He was spotted on the Galaxy bench before the match and watched the game from a suite.
For fans, it was a relief just to see the season get underway on schedule.
It wasn't until Wednesday night that Major League Soccer and the MLS Players Union reached agreement on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement that averted what would have been the first players' strike in the league's history.
The new deal, which boosts salaries and introduces limited free agency, paves the way for what promises to be a celebratory 20th season for the North American league.
The first weekend of action will be highlighted by the clash of two new expansion teams as Orlando hosts New York City FC on Sunday in the Citrus Bowl stadium.

Porcupine Warriors to stay local

Asante Kotoko say they are not looking at the option of an expatriate to replace coach Mas-Ud Dramani.
The Ghanaian champions are set to sever ties with Dramani who has been on-leave since February 16.
Supersport.com understands that as the club has opted to head hunt for a new coach, several CV's, mostly from expatriates, have been submitted to the club. They include former Turkish coach Telat Uzum and one Portuguese coach who has previously had stints in South Africa named Da Silva.
Former Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast coach, Rigo Gervais, has also thrown himself into the fray for the job but the club’s spokesperson says management will only go for a top notch local who knows the terrain better.
”Management has decided to go for a top local coach should we conclude exit talks with coach Dramani,” Kwaku Ahenkorah told supersport.com.
”Giving the job to an expatriate is completely out of the equation. There is not enough time for an expatriate to come in to adapt to the Ghanaian terrain,” he continued.
Former Hearts of Oak coach David Duncan remains the favourite of the management team of the Asante Kotoko but his appointment seem to meet some challenges from influential elements within the club.

SuperSport, Ajax look to bounce back

SuperSport United will look to bounce back from a loss in their last league match when they host Ajax Cape Town at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Kick-off is at 6:00pm.
The side from Tshwane suffered their first league defeat to AmaZulu, going down 5-2 to the side from Durban last weekend.
The loss sees SuperSport placed seventh on the league table with 27 points from 20 matches, and attacking midfielder Thuso Phala admits they have learnt from their loss to AmaZulu and are expecting a tough match against Ajax.
“I think it [the loss to AmaZulu] was a wake-up call and we are eager to get back on track and cement our place in the top eight,” said Phala.
“We went for a win [against AmaZulu] and things just opened up at the back, it was just not our day, it was one of those games and we have put it behind us.
“Ajax are a very organised team and they are above us on the log, so for us to continue climbing the table we have to beat team.
“It is our home game, so we have to make that count, we are taking things one game at a time.”
Ajax are placed sixth on the league table with 28 points from 21 games, but come into this game off the back of a 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking after that match coach Roger de Sa admitted his side were poor against the Amakhosi and will have to improve if they hope to beat SuperSport.
“I thought we weren’t very good (against Chiefs), we weren’t very good at all,” said De Sa.
“They (Chiefs) weren’t a lot better than us but we weren’t that good. We were poor and never got going.
“I know we had quite a lot of possession, but the possession didn’t mean anything because we couldn’t get the ball into the final third.
“Twelve shots on goal and we never hit the target once.
“The only time we threatened was with Nathan Paulse’s headers, two headers on target and that was it.
“We have to improve if we want to beat SuperSport.”
In head-to-head stats, SuperSport and Ajax have met in 31 league matches since 1999/2000.
Matsatsantsa have 12 wins compared to 10 for the Urban Warriors, while nine matches have been drawn.
SuperSport have won eight of their 15 home matches against Ajax, suffering four defeats in the process.
When the teams met earlier this season in Cape Town they played out a goalless stalemate.

Chief Agwu restores order for Enyimba

Striking Enyimba's older players appear to have had a change of heart following a Friday evening visit from the club chairman and appear set to honor the club's first Premier League game of the season, a home tie against Akwa United on Sunday evening.
The older players grieving over alleged payments had refused to train since the team's return from their Champions League initial round conquest against Buffles du Borgou FC of Benin Repubulic and threatened to sit out Sunday's derby however after a meeting with Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu are set to train with the rest of the newer players on Saturday morning.
The chairman informed the players in the said meeting that the government had not released any funds as yet and their decision to sit out a game of that magnitude could have severe consequences of their careers. He further went on to paint the unlikely sad scenarios that could emanate from their actions if they indeed did boycott the game.
He however assured them that the club had their best interests at heart and they will get their entitlements as soon as the funds are available. Our source says a lot of the players had a change of heart after the meeting and will train Saturday morning.
Enyimba kick off their Premier League season against neighbors Akwa United on Sunday evening and face Egyptian side Smouha next weekend in Aba.

Audu set for Kwara United debut

ABS legend Akeem Audu is set to make his debut for Kwara United in the Glo Premier League.
Audu switched to neighbours, Kwara United after spending a season in the Nigeria National League (NNL) with relegated ABS.
“I’m pleased to join Kwara United after eight years at ABS in different divisions. Kwara United is one of the top sides in Nigeria,” Audu told supersport.com on the eve of his debut.
The striker now has all the time to focus on football after completing his degree in Educational Management at the University of Ilorin.
“It’s interesting to be in the league as a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). I remember my former teammate, Fade Adebayo, participated in the scheme as a footballer,” Audu said to supersport.com.
Audu, who joined ABS eight years ago, is one of the few players who have played in four different divisions of Nigeria’s football league structure in the modern era.
Kwara United make their return to the Premier League with a road trip at former champions, Dolphins, on Saturday.

Melai out of Lobi’s league opener

Lobi Stars first-choice goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai, has been ruled out of the club’s league opener at Bayelsa United.
Melai, who set a league record with seven goals from penalties last term, sustained an injury during training.
“It’s painful. After preparing and working hard for the league to resume, I suddenly realize it won’t be so after all.
“This situation is like expulsion in final year after all the preparation,” he told supersport.com.
However, the goalkeeper remains positive despite the setback.
“Injury is part of football, but I will bounce back in style,” he said to supersport.com.
Melai made his top flight debut for “The Pride of Benue” on the last day of the 2011/12 season at Kaduna United and has since remained an influential member of the team.

Lille block Traore from Mali AYC

French side Lille has refused to allow midfielder Adama Traore ‘Noss’ join Mali for the 2015 Africa U-20 Championship.
Head coach Fagnéry Diarra had included 10 foreign-based players in his final squad for the March 8-22 competition with two prospects - Youssouf Koné and Traore from the French club.
The Ligue 1 side has however blocked the move to allow the 19-year-old who is breaking into the senior team leave for the AYC.
Traore is a promising prospect who made his Ligue 1 debut at 24 September 2014 against OGC Nice in a 1-0 away defeat. He scored against Evian TG last January after making his league debut in September 2014.
Mali who placed fourth at the last AYC are in Group B with Zambia, South Africa and Ghana. They face the young Chipolopolo in their tournament opener on March 9.

Satellites gear up for South Africa

Ghana’s Black Satellites are gearing up for their AYC opener after arriving in Senegal on Thursday night.
Team Ghana had been holding their final pre-tournament camping in Turkey in the last fortnight.
The tree-time African U-20 Champions held their first training session in M'Bour on Friday afternoon ahead of their opening Group B encounter with South Africa on Monday. All 21 players on Ghana’s roster took part of the session.
Head coach Sellas Tetteh who led the 2009 batch to win Ghana’s third U-20 title is well aware of the big task ahead but is confident his charges are ready for the challenge.
“It is not easy being a former champion and everyone will come playing tougher against us because we are the Ghana team,” Tetteh told Graphic Sports.
“All these require us to be cautious and not being carried away or complacent.”
“We will be ready for our first game on Monday and we will wait to see how it turns out,” he continued.
Tetteh adds that Ghana are focused on working to their strength and realising their goals rather being disrupted by the favourites tag being accorded the team.
“I believe people see as favourites because we are Ghana, but the truth is, it is our performance that is more important to me. We are going with our own dreams and expectations and realising them will engage our focus, rather than whether we are favourites or not,” he said.
Ghana will play Zambia and Mali to complete the group games.

Cisse, Evans handed hefty bans for spitting

Newcastle United forward Papiss Cisse has been banned for seven matches and Manchester United defender Jonny Evans for six after they spat at each other during a Premier League match, the Football Association (FA) said on Saturday.
The incident, which was not spotted by match officials, occurred in the 38th minute of Manchester United's 1-0 win at St James' Park on Wednesday.
"Both players were charged in relation to an alleged breach of FA Rule E1 in that in or around the 38th minute of the fixture they spat at each other," the FA said in a statement.
"Mr Cisse accepted the charge and his suspension consists of six matches, which is the standard penalty for this offence, with an additional one match as he has previously accepted a violent conduct charge this season.
"Mr Evans denied the charge but it was found proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing on Friday."
Neither player has been granted the right to appeal against the sanction and the bans are effective immediately.
The FA's charge was brought after a three-man panel of former referees said both players should have been dismissed for their actions.
Northern Ireland international Evans, 27, will miss fourth-placed United's FA Cup quarterfinal against Arsenal on Monday and Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Chelsea.
Senegalese forward Cisse, 11th-placed Newcastle's top scorer this season, will sit out fixtures against Everton, Arsenal, Sunderland, Liverpool, Spurs, Swansea City and Leicester City.

APR, Police in battle of forces

Army side APR and Police FC face off in a battle of the forces this afternoon at the Kigali regional stadium in the biggest fixture of the National Football League this weekend.
Police will be looking to register their second win in a row after seeing off Sunrise FC 2-0 on Wednesday however, head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo is wary of the challenge that lies ahead.
Their first round encounter was a goalless draw and the last time the law enforcers overcame the army side was February 2012 in an exciting 3-2 victory.
A repeat of the same result would ensure Mbungo’s side walked away with three points but most importantly reduced the gap between the two sides from the current eight to five points as both teams eye a perfect run to the end of the season with eight games to go. APR has a game in hand.
Table leaders APR currently have 39 points from 17 games while Police has managed 31 points from 18 games and lie in third position, one point behind AS Kigali which hosts Amagaju tomorrow at the Kicukiro stadium.
APR will miss the services of defensive midfielder Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza who is nursing an ear infection but will welcome back central defender Emery Bayisenge and talisman Jean Claude Iranzi who were rested in the goalless draw against AS Kigali on Wednesday.
Police will also be without fullback Mohamed Mpozembizi through suspension having accumulated two yellow cards.
In the other games of the day, third placed Rayon Sports travel to Rusizi to face Espoir with the aim of winning their seventh victory this season.
The Blues were held to a goalless draw by bottom-placed Isonga on Wednesday and will be looking to return to winning ways ahead of their first round tie against Egyptian giants Zamalek next Friday in the Caf Confederations Cup.
Marines host Mukura at the Tam Tam stadium in Rubavu and will be eyeing victory in a bid to protect their unbeaten home record in the second round.
Victory will send the ninth-placed Marines (22 points) into seventh position, one point away from the top four. Mukura will also be aiming for a much-needed win that will send them further away from the relegation zone.
Godfrey Okoko’s side is currently 11th with 16 points, one ahead of Musanze and Etincelles that are tied on 15 points in 12th and 13th positions.

The Prince will stay, says Schalke

Schalke chief Horst Heldt says there has not been the thought of ending midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng’s contract.
Amidst consistent reports claiming that the club has lost interest in continuing with the suspended Ghana international, the Royal Blues’ Sporting Director says both parties have not pondered the possibility of a premature termination of the contract which runs out in 18 months.
“There are no signals from either Schalke 04 or Kevin-Prince Boateng to want to end our contract prematurely. There are also no inquiries from other clubs, so we have not dealt with the subject.”
”He has one more year on his contract, and I can assure that from both parties there is not the intention of an earlier departure,” Heldt said.
Boateng who just turned 28, has already been linked to some European big wigs including Inter, Juventus and very recently, Arsenal.

The Predictor sets sail with doubleheader

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is back on the menu again after throwing up some of the most fascinating stats and records in its history.
Unfortunately the signature game for the season, Heartland versus Kano Pillars was called off on the eve of the start of the campaign after the champions were robbed while on their way to OWerri.
So it is only befitting that the doubleheader in Port Harcourt takes the slot to set the tone for this season's campaign. The matches are live on SuperSport Select.
Sharks v Sunshine Stars (Liberation Stadium)
The Blue Angels and Owena Waves open the new season. Sharks will be without the man who netted 14 of their league goals last season - Christian Pyagbara. But I do not expect them to be short on goalscoring personnel after bringing in Bode Daniel and Yomi Olaoke from Crown FC.
It is however Sunshine Stars that I worry a bit for going forward. Two of their key men upfront, Ajani Ibrahim and Dele Olorundare, have been suspended indefinitely by the club, but that is a running story for another. I expect Sunshine Stars to play with some kind of organisation this time especially under English coach, Paul Ashworth than last term when they lost this contest 1-4. But I'll stick with Sharks for the full points.
My prediction: 1-0
Dolphins v Kwara United (Liberation Stadium)
Kwara United have lost in all of their travels to Dolphins in the Premier League era, and I am banking on them to change that. Dolphins have had competitive games under their belt and that would prove to be an advantage for them though the trio of Jonathan Zikiye, Joseph Douhadji and Pyagbara are not in the match day squad.
Kwara United will not make it easier for Dolphins but I doubt their capability of taking back a result with them to Ilorin.
My prediction: 2-1
Enyimba v Akwa United (Enyimba Stadium)
This is always a grudge game between the two clubs, and I do not think this season's clash will be any different. Enyimba new boy, Ezekiel Bassey, acquired from Akwa United will be unleashed on the former teammates and I will like to see how he responds in this match.
Enyimba will have to be wary that a former coach of theirs, Zachary Baraje, is the man to lead Akwa United from the dugout. He knows the Aba club's playing personnel, and I fancy a very tight contest in Aba on Sunday.
My Prediction: 1-0
Wikki Tourists v 3SC (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium)
I find this matchup an interesting one considering the fact that these are two clubs who have just returned to the top flight after a season in the second tier, the Nigeria National League (NNL). The Tourists have quietly done business in the transfer market but it is 3SC who brought in some stellar names including Rasheed Olabiyi as a free agent.
I do fancy 3SC pulling off a result at Wikki as they look a balanced team in terms of playing personnel going into this season.
My prediction: 1-1
El-Kanemi Warriors v Nasarawa United (Sani Abacha Stadium)
Warriors start the season depleted after champions Kano Pillars acquired two of their best defenders, Reuben Ogbonnaya and Joel Djondang while goalkeeper David Obiazor moved south to join Heartland. Nasarawa United have equally lost a few of their men and will miss the midfield presence of Tony Edjomariegwe.
El-Kanemi will also not have head coach, Salisu Yusuf on the bench. A stalemate looks in the card in this game for me as I think both teams will cancel themselves out and play cautious.
My prediction: 0-0
Giwa FC v Abia Warriors (Rwang Pam Stadium)
Last season's newcomers face off, and it is surely going to be a tantalizing matchup. Giwa FC have seen a number of departures in the off-season but they still have the firepower to face Abia Warriors who have brought in some experienced players including former Enyimba defender, Valentine Nwabili. This same fixture last term ended goalless, and I am going for the same scoreline.
My prediction: 0-0
Bayelsa United v Lobi Stars (Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium)
After escaping the drop last season, Bayelsa United begin the new season against Lobi and I am keen to see how they cope with life without the freescoring Peter Ebimobowei who has since joined Egyptian giants, Al Ahly. Lobi are usually scrappy on the road and I do not think that will change with the appointment of Justin Tenger as head coach known for setting up his teams defensively and physically.
So I think Bayelsa United have a chance of taking the full points in this match if they take their scoring opportunities.
My prediction: 2-1
Gabros FC v Warri Wolves (Gabros Stadium)
This is going to be a tricky tie for Wolves. Gabros have returned to the top flight for the first time in 10 years and they have come with a change in name as they are now called Ifeanyi Ubah United. They have also recruited decently too, bringing in the like of Chibuzor Okonkwo and Brendan Ogbu as well as a Bulgarian coach, Mitko Dobrev.
Wolves are without head coach Paul Aigbogun for this clash as he is away on a coaching programme in the United Kingdom. I know the Warri club are good enough to win on any ground in the country especially with forward and wing men like Joseph Osadiaye, Freedom Omofomah, Abu Azeez and Michael Egbeta. A draw looks a possibility for Wolves to take out of this matchup.
My prediction: 2-2
FC Taraba v Enugu Rangers (Jolly Nyame)
Rangers have continued their drought of league success and have now gone 31 years without a major silverware. Yes they have brought in Kelechi Emeteole as head coach, but I still think their playing personnel remain lightweight compared to Kano Pillars, Enyimba and Warri Wolves, who I regard as title contenders.
FC Taraba won this matchup last season 2-0, and will look to do same this time. The Jalingo club, I expect, will find Rangers a different team this time under Emeteole, who is a master when it comes to playing against northern teams. But FC Taraba will just do enough to nick this.
My prediction: 1-0

Smouha want venue change for Enyimba tie

Egyptian side Smouha have asked Caf to change the venue of their match against Nigerian giants Enyimba in the Champions League citing security reasons.
The round of 32 stage match will hold on March 15 in Aba while the second leg will be in Alexandria two weeks later.
Sources in the Egyptian side revealed to supersport.com that the team officials asked caf to change the venue of the match for security reasons after the robbery attack against Nigerian champions Kano Pillars during the week while they were travelling to a league match.
Kano Pillars bus was shot by gunmen and the incident left five players of the Nigerian club injured.
The Alexandria-based club are worried about the security concerns in parts of the West African nation.
However, the security issues in Nigeria have mostly been isolated to the northeast of the country except for a few attacks in the northern region.
Smouha are still waiting for Caf's reply on the request to have their clash at Enyimba moved to another venue.

Bradford, Reading draw sets up replay

FA Cup giant-killers Bradford City and Championship Reading played out a full-blooded 0-0 draw in the quarterfinal on Saturday to force a replay with a Wembley semifinal at stake.
Third tier Bradford, who knocked out Premier League Chelsea and Sunderland in a remarkable run to the quarterfinals, dominated for much of the second half but were unable to break Reading's resolute defence.
Despite living a charmed life for much of the game, second tier Reading could have won it in the closing minutes when Oliver Norwood's looping free kick hit the post and caused havoc in the Bradford area.
Aston Villa host Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion later on Saturday, Liverpool entertain Championship Blackburn Rovers on Sunday and holders Arsenal visit Manchester United on Monday.

Derby ends in goalless draw

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played to a goalless draw in an Absa Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday afternoon. Amakhosi continue to be on top of the league log with 51 points from 22 matches.

Live blog – with your thoughts

Bernard Parker and Siphiwe Tshabalala returned to the starting line-up, with the midfielder getting his record breaking 23rd Derby cap (since the introduction of the PSL).
The Buccaneers started aggressively, trying to win control of the midfield. The visitors had most of the early ball possession without, however, threatening Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
Actually, it was Chiefs that had a good shout for a penalty when George Lebese was brought down by Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni. But the referee decided otherwise.
The game was played at a high tempo with both teams looking to move forward quickly whenever in ball possession.
The best early chance came for Siboniso Gaxa in the 32nd minute. Tshabalala’s excellent cross from the left got to the Amahosi defender, but he couldn’t convert. A minute later it was Tshabalala who came close, but his shot at goal was well saved by the Buccaneers goalkeeper.
Slowly, Chiefs started to gain the upper hand, winning more and more battles in the centre of the park.
However, halftime arrived without any goals with Amakhosi having had the better opportunities to score.
Chiefs started the second half well, trying to put early pressure on the Buccaneers whenever in possession of the ball.
Tshabalala released a powerful shot with his left-foot from outside the box in the 57th minute. The ball looked to fly straight into the goal, but a reflection off a Pirates defender ensured it bounced off the crossbar back into the field.
The Buccaneers also got a few opportunities. The game opened up and certainly from a spectator point of view it was livelier than during the first 45 minutes.
Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter decided to make his first substitution in the 70th minute, bringing on Siphelele Mthembu, who had returned from injury, for Lebese, who started the game very well but faded a bit later on.
Mthembu became the striker, while Parker moved slightly to the left wing. This helped Parker to get into more space, which made him a more threatening player.
Amakhosi got a few great opportunities to open the score around the 80th minute, the best coming for Gaxa. However, the Pirates goalkeeper made an excellent intervention.
Towards the end, the game was flowing up and down, with chances arriving for both sides.
It was a fascinating second half to watch, even though no goals were scored.
Chiefs’ next game will be away against Maritzburg United at Pietermaritzburg’s Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday, 11 March (kick-off at 7:30pm).
Kaizer Chiefs 0
Orlando Pirates 0
Kaizer Chiefs: Khune, Gaxa (Moleko 91’), Mashamaite, Mathoho, Masilela, Masango (Maluleka 89’), Letsholonyane, Katsande, Lebese (Mthembu 70’), Tshabalala, Parker

Orlando Pirates: Mhlongo, Jele, Mahamutsa, Sangweni, Matlaba, Makola (Bacela 85’), Sarr, Ntshumayelo (Rakhale 70’), Myeni, Manyisa, Majoro (Erasmus 62’)

Mozambique U23s eliminate Uganda

Mozambique’s under 23 national team are through to the next round of the 2015 All Africa Games qualifiers after beating their Ugandan counterparts, the Kobs, 4-1 on spot kicks at Nakivubo Stadium in Kampala on Saturday.
Both teams huffed and puffed over the two legs in Maputo and Kampala but could not produce a goal in open play in 180 minutes of football.
Substitute Julius Malingumu was the only one to convert his kick for the Kobs. His Vipers teammate Farouk Miya and KCC striker Derrick Nsimbambi had theirs saved.
Gildo and Luis were some of the hosts’ scorers from the spot as Mozambique set up a final round date with Ghana.
Just like it was in Maputo two weeks ago, the game at Nakivubo lacked vision and direction with the hosts having promising attempts but without making any inroads.
Defender Joseph Nsubuga and Miya had good chances to open the scoring but fluffed the opportunities.
Yunus Sentamu started upfront alongside Villa Oromochan but the strikers were ineffective. They were later replaced by Martin Kizza and Malingumu but the visitors held on to send the tie to spot kicks, out-converting Uganda 4-1.

Stage set for U20 Championship

The stage is once again all set for the unearthing of the future stars of African football. The CAF U20 Championship has undisputedly served as a major breeding ground for talents who have gone on to become household names on the continent and the world at large.
