Meteors coach wants seven foreign pros

Ghana Under-23 team coach Malik Jabir has requested the invitation of seven foreign-based players to face Mozambique next weekend.
The Black Meteors are preparing to host Mozambique under-23s in the first leg of the final round of qualifiers to the 2015 All Africa Games slated for Brazzaville later in September.
Supersport.com is reliably informed the Meteors technical team has asked the Ghana FA to assist in getting about seven foreign-based players, some of which include ex-Ghana under-20s, Rahman Chibsah (Sassuolo, Italy), Ebenezer Ofori (AIK Stockholm, Sweden), Anderlecht’s Frank Acheampong and Adam Basit (Free State Stars, South Africa).
Serbian side Cukaricki’s attacking midfielder Obeng Regan as well as Isaac Honny who plays for Thai club BEC Tero Sasana are some of the players expected to join camp for the final lap of qualifiers to the All Africa Games.
Honny, a central defender, is not new to the current team as he previously trained with the side during the Christmas break.
Meanwhile, the local batch of the Black Meteors are currently in camp without players from Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak due to their involvement in the Caf inter-club competitions this weekend.

Acheampong is new Olympics coach

Great Olympics have announced the appointment of former Real Sociedad midfielder Joachim Yaw Acheampong as new coach.
Acheampong had been without a job since resigning from Inter Allies in January – five months after signing for the club without a competitive match.
“As the Wonder Club opens this new chapter, we are confident that Yaw [Acheampong] is the right person to spearhead the technical direction of the club,” parts of a statement released by the club reads.
“He has a proven ability to create strategic clarity, drive innovation and growth, ensure disciplined and prompt execution, and deliver results. We believe that his passion for excellence will help ensure that Accra Great Olympics continues to climb higher and remain a dominant force in football both in Ghana and Africa,” it added.
The 41-year-old coach whose appointment takes immediate effect, has the herculean task of raising the Great Olympics from the relegation places. They lie second from bottom on the FCPPL log with nine points after 10 games.
“I’m a team coach, and I believe together with the technical team we will fix the problem confronting the team,” Yaw Acheampong said in quotes attributed to him by Daily Guide.
“I am honoured to have been asked to take up this challenge, and confident about the prospects that lie in the future of my new family, the Wonder Club - Accra Great Olympics.
“The team has a lot of quality players. I have set a three-match target, and I believe if we achieve that we will jump from the relegation zone. I watched them play against Kotoko, and I must say they have quality, I want to thank management for the faith reposed in me,” he added.
Acheampong’s appointment lasts till the end of the current season.

Duncan savours chance with Kotoko

New Asante Kotoko coach David Duncan has confessed that it would have been criminal on his part not to have joined the club.
The ex-defender, famous for stirring up controversies with remarks about his new employers in the past, made this pronouncement in his introductory address to the team before their first training session upon arrival in Algeria for Saturday’s CAF Champions League, 1/16th stage, first leg match against MC El Eulma.
He feels he has served almost every club within his family lineage and it was fair to one day work as coach of the porcupine warriors before closing the chapter of coaching local clubs.
“In all my coaching life; I have served at my father’s hometown, that’s in the Fanti area. My father is a Fanti. I’ve served where I was raised – where I’ve spent virtually all the days of my life; that’s Accra. I’ve served all the two glamorous, traditional or well-known clubs – Olympics and Hearts. It would have been very criminal not to have served where my mother comes from,” said David Duncan.
“Even before this announcement or this introduction, you had speculated, you had assumed. As a matter of fact, I’m happy to be here. Being amongst you confirms what you have been hearing. I am happy to be here.”
Duncan who is ‘on observer status’ with the team in Algeria would take charge of his official game away to Bechem United in the FCPPL on March 22.

APR out to stop Al Ahly

Rwandan record league champions APR are eyeing victory when they host Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the first leg of the Caf Champions League first round tie on Saturday afternoon at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
APR interim coach Vincent Mashami is confident of a positive result. “We know Al Ahly is a very successful club on the African continent but we shall not respect them when we face off," told supersport.com, adding: "We are playing at home so we are going to make sure we score and avoid conceding.”
Barring the first leg, the last time APR faced an Egyptian team in a Caf competition was in the 2009 Caf Confederation Cup second round against Sawahel “Haras El-Hodoud” and the Rwandan outfit managed a goalless draw at home before losing 2-0 in Egypt.
Mashami said: “Honestly, from the last time APR played against an Egyptian side to now, there is completely a new set of players. The current team is comprised of young players who are eager to make their mark and are ready for the challenge at hand.”
Twenty-year old right back Michel Rusheshangoga admitted that the mood in camp is optimistic and that alongside his teammates, they expect victory.
Meanwhile, Al Ahly head coach Juan Garrido said: “We want to play very well in the first leg so that we do not have difficulty in the return leg. We shall not despise APR but we shall try to play our style of football and our aim is to win.”
Zambian Janny Sikazwe is the match referee and will be assisted by fellow countrymen Bruno Tembo, Amos Nanga Chalwe and Stanley Hachiwa.

Bullet removed from Gambo's shoulder

Gambo Mohammed who was the only one of the five injured Kano Pillar players that suffered a gunshot wound has undergone surgery and is recuperating at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Armed robbers on Thursday attacked the Kano Pillars contingent along Abuja-Lokoja Road as they were traveling to Owerri for their Day one, Week one game against Heartland FC, and five of Kano Pillars players including Gambo were injured during the attack.
Idris Malikawa, the club's media officer, has revealed that Otekpa and Murtala Adamu have been discharged from hospital while Gambo is still left behind.
"Two players have been discharged from hospital, they are Eneji Otekpa and Murtala Adamu. Only Gambo Mohammed remains in the hospital now, but he is getting better,” said Malikawa .
The hospital had discharged Reuben Ogbonnaya and Ubong Ekpai earlier.
Pillars will now kick off their first game for the new season on Saturday when they will host Bayelsa United in the league, while their Caf Champions League clash against Moghreb Tetouan of Morocco has been moved to next weekend.

Maputo derby kicks off Mozambique season

The Mozambique football season gets underway on Saturday with plenty at stake after sponsors mcel announced a $200 000 sponsorship package for the League Mozambique Football (LMF).
LMF and mcel signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Maputo during the week as the league starts with a Maputo derby between Costa del Sol and defending champions Sports League (formerly Liga Desportivo de Maputo and Liga Desportivo de Muculmana).
Mozambican newspaper Journal Noticias reported that the renewal extends the sponsorship that has spanned 11 years with mcel, whose commercial director Claudio Chiche is excited.
"We are pleased with mcel to maintain a relationship with the LMF, an institution of recognised merit in the Mozambican sports environment, the way it has managed the sport, in this particular case football," Chiche is quoted as saying.
LMF president, Alberto Simango Junior, in turn, reaffirmed their commitment to manage the money prudently. The Moçambola games will officially kick off with a ceremony in Vilanculos, Inhambane Province.
"We started the relationship with this prestigious company, continuously since 2004. In 2004 sponsorships were around $ 50,000 and are now about 200 thousand. This is gratifying for us," Simango is quoted as saying.

Rodgers relaxed over Sterling contract

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident Raheem Sterling will sign a contract extension at Anfield despite talks being put on hold until the end of the season.
The 20-year-old England international, whose deal expires in 2017, has developed into one of Liverpool's most influential players and has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season.
"I am relaxed about the Raheem situation. He has a couple of years to go," Rodgers told a news conference on Saturday.
"It is quite obvious that Liverpool is the best option for him. He has just turned 20 in December and he has already made 114 appearances.
"He has a great opportunity and for any young player there is a great opportunity here. We have a track record of developing talents and there will be more of those players like Raheem who will get that opportunity."
Fifth-placed Liverpool are unbeaten in the league since mid-December and their rapid rise up the table means they are now two points behind Manchester United who occupy fourth spot.
Liverpool travel to Rodgers's former club Swansea City on Monday and the Northern Irishman is expecting a close fight in the race for Champions League qualification.
"I think it is going to be very tight," Rodgers said. "We have joined the race in the last few months and we are really looking forward to these games.
"We need to continue to be aggressive and give everything we have. The points total is very close."

Pauw names squad for Botswana qualifier

Banyana Banyana head coach Vera Pauw has announced a squad of 18 players that will travel to Botswana for an All Africa Games qualifier.
The match takes place on Friday, 20 March 2015. Kick-off is at 6pm.
Pauw has retained the bulk of the team that returned from the Cyprus Women’s Cup on Friday.
Of the 23 that travelled to Europe, five have been released from camp.
There are two additions to the remaining 16 - Durban Ladies defender Zama Cele and USA-based Kaylin Swart to bring the Botswana-bound squad to 18 players.
The players who will not be part of the next camp are Disebo Mametja (University of Johannesburg), Tshepiso Olga Mokabane (FC Union Nove Zamky, Slovakia), Mputle Tshetsana, (Titans Ladies, North West), Rhoda Mulaudzi (Mamelodi Sundowns FC), Kelso Peskin (Tyler Junior College, USA - exams), Mamello Makhabane Palace Super Falcons, Johannesburg - ankle injury) and Andile Dlamini (Mamelodi Sundowns FC - knee injury).
The team goes into camp on Monday, 16 March and is expected to travel to Botswana on Wednesday, 18 March.
They will return to South Africa on Saturday, 21 March. The second leg will be played on the weekend of 10, 11 and 12 April.
Banyana Banyana squad:
Goalkeepers: Roxanne Barker (THOR/KA, Iceland), Kaylin Swart (AIB Business College, USA).
Defenders: Nothando Vilakazi (Palace Super Falcons, Johannesburg), Janine Van Wyk (JVW FC, Johannesburg), Noko Matlou (Maindis FC, Polokwane), Zama Cele (Durban Ladies, Durban), Lerato Kgasago (Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Johannesburg), Lebogang Ramalepe (Maindis FC, Polokwane)
Midfielders: Amanda Dlamini (University of Johannesburg), Leandra Smeda (UWC Ladies, Cape Town), Alocia Thoboka (Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Johannesburg), Refiloe Jane (VUT Ladies, Johannesburg), Nompumelelo Nyandeni (JVW FC, Johannesburg), Slindile Ngubane (Durban Ladies, Durban)
Strikers: Shiwe Nongwanya (Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies, Bloemfontein), Jermaine Seoposenwe (Samford University, USA), Portia Modise (Croesus FC, Johannesburg), Sanah Mollo (Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Johannesburg).

Criticism part of the job for Ancelotti

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has said the intense scrutiny he has come under in recent weeks is part of the job of coaching one of the biggest sides in the world.
Madrid president Florentino Perez called an impromptu press conference on Thursday to deny rumours that Ancelotti could be sacked if the European champions lose El Clasico against Barcelona next weekend.
"I have always understood criticism as part of my job," Ancelotti said on Saturday.
"Coaching Real Madrid means coaching the biggest team in the world and if you do that then you get the most criticism too. It is an honour for me to coach this club."
Los Blancos squeezed into the last 16 of the Champions League in midweek despite an embarrassing 4-3 home defeat to Schalke - their fifth defeat in 15 games in 2015.
That run of form has also seen Ancelotti's men surrender top spot in La Liga to Barcelona for the first time in five months and with little room for error ahead of their trip to the Catalan capital next Sunday.
And the Italian admitted there could be changes for the visit of Levante on Sunday, but insisted he would continue with his same attacking philosophy.
"The president always evaluates the work that we do and some things could change.
"We have looked at what has happened and in an ideal world we will change things, but without losing our identity.
"We have a clear identity and in the past few games we haven't shown it."
Ancelotti should be able to recall both Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos back into the starting line-up after long term absences due to muscle injuries.
Meanwhile, full-backs Dani Carvajal and Marcelo will return after being rested in midweek.

Real's Ramos back for Levante clash

Real Madrid have centre back Sergio Ramos back in the squad for Sunday's La Liga game at home to Levante, when Carlo Ancelotti's men will try to end a run of three matches without a win.
Ramos has not played since damaging a hamstring in early February and his return is another boost for Real after midfielder Luka Modric featured for the first time in four months in Tuesday's 4-3 Champions League loss at home to Schalke 04.
The reverse in Europe came after a 1-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao and a 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal in La Liga and prompted a furious reaction from the Real fans at the Bernabeu, who roundly whistled Ancelotti and the players.
The Italian told a news conference on Saturday that Real had "paid a high price" with injuries in recent months.
Midfielder James Rodriguez is also sidelined, depriving the team of one of their most creative players.
"He (Ramos) is doing really well, he has worked well and he is going to help us, as will Modric and all the players who have returned from this period of injuries," Ancelotti said.
"He (Ramos) has personality, character and everyone is happy that he has returned."
Real could find themselves four points adrift of Barca by the time they run out on Sunday.
Barca, who host their arch rivals for the La Liga 'Clasico' in just over a week's time, play at Eibar later on Saturday and a win would lift them to 65 points with 11 games left.
Ancelotti said he was sure Real, who set a Spanish record of 22 consecutive wins in all competitions at the end of last year, would get back on track soon.
"We have to focus on our work and change this run of form," he told reporters.
"To do that, we are going to try and play a quality game with intensity, with everybody playing and working together, and helping one another.
"It is normal to be affected, but that doesn't mean that we are going to give in.
"We are going to make a greater effort and put in more work in order to turn the situation around and I am convinced that we will do it."

Trio level in Championship race

Bournemouth, Watford and Middlesbrough all scored convincing wins at the top of the tightest league in Europe on Saturday but Derby County faltered in the English Championship title race by drawing at fellow promotion hopefuls Norwich City.
Bournemouth, set on their way by a first-half hat-trick from Brett Pittman, thumped bottom-of-the-table Blackpool 4-0, Watford beat Reading 4-1 and Middlesbrough defeated Ipswich Town 4-1 to take all three teams to 69 points at the top of the second tier.
Bournemouth lead with a goal difference of plus-39 while Watford are second, having scored more goals than Middlesbrough.
With the top two winning automatic promotion and the next four entering the playoffs producing the additional promoted side, Derby slipped to fourth on 67 points after drawing 1-1 at Norwich who stayed in contention on 66 points.
The day's biggest losers were Brentford, who remained sixth but lost ground after being beaten 2-1 at home by Cardiff City who had two players sent off, including match-winner Federico Macheda, the former Manchester United striker.
Wigan Athletic, who won the FA Cup and were relegated from the Premier League two years ago and are now battling to avoid dropping falling into the third tier, boosted their chances with a 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Rotherham United. Former Liverpool and Stoke City forward Jermaine Pennant scored both goals.
But Millwall, who sacked coach Ian Holloway during the week, and Blackpool, who spent the 2010-11 season in the Premier League, look like being cut adrift after losing at Bolton Wanderers and Bournemouth respectively.
Blackpool have 22 points, Millwall 31 and Wigan 34, six behind Rotherham and Fulham, who drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.
There was no stopping Bournemouth who maintained their position as the highest scorers, putting four past Blackpool and taking their tally for the season to 78 goals.
Pittman took his to 13 for the season with his 39-minute hat-trick and Callum Wilson added the fourth from a second-half penalty.
Watford also put four past Reading, who face Bradford City in an FA Cup quarterfinal replay on Monday, while Patrick Bamford, on loan at Middlesbrough from Chelsea, scored twice in the 4-1 win over Ipswich.

The Predictor settles for 3SC, Heartland

For me, there is no better setting to set the tone for the second gameweek in the top division. Two of the Glo Premier League's traditional teams, 3SC and Heartland, go head to head this Saturday in one of Nigeria's largest towns, Ibadan.
Up north, champions Kano Pillars play their first game of the season after being excused from their opening day clash with Heartland following the armed robbery attack on their team.
On Sunday, Kwara United play hosts to El-Kanemi Warriors and the match is live on SuperSport Select from 4pm local time [5pm CAT].
Saturday, March 14, 2015
3SC v Heartland [Lekan Salami Stadium]
It was a disappointing start for 3SC after returning to the top flight. They lost 0-2 at Wikki Tourists and their performance was quite poor, but I expect they will step up a notch. And they will face Heartland who have travelled without experienced duo of Chinedu Efugh and Julius Ubido.
I expect the like of Rasheed Olabiyi to pull the strings in 3SC's first home game of the season. I am sure that faithful of 3SC will hope that Heartland do not repeat that performance of 2013 when they defeated the Ibadan club 2-0 in this same fixture. And I trust the Oluyole Warriors to claim their first full points of the season.
My prediction: 2-1
Kano Pillars v Bayelsa United [Sani Abacha Stadium]
The champions play their first game of the season and without some of their key men. Gambo Muhammed, Adamu Murtala, Eneji Otekpa and Christian Obiozor, who is down with fever, are all missing. But the Kano club have Adamu Mohammed and Adamu Hassan as the men to start up front for them.
Bayelsa United started with a draw at home against Lobi Stars, and this game looks quite a task to overcome for them. I do not think that United will leave Kano with a point.
My prediction: 2-0
Sunday, March 15, 2015
Nasarawa United v Wikki Tourists [Lafia Township Stadium]
Victor Yakubu was the hero in the Tourists' two-nil on the opening day. A lot of enthusiasts are already hoping he will be a candidate for the top scorer and may be score more than 23 goals to beat Mfon Udoh's record.
Nasarawa United began the season with a loss. They suffered a one-nil loss at El-Kanemi Warriors. I am going for Mohammed Baba Ganaru's men to make hay in this contest.
My prediction: 1-0
Akwa United v FC Taraba [Uyo Township Stadium]
Akwa United put up one of the most talked about defensive performance I have seen in a long while in the league at Enyimba and they came off good with a 0-0 draw. I am expecting Zachary Baraje to set up his men to go for the kill against FC Taraba.
FC Taraba edged Rangers 3-2 in their opening game with Abdulmalik Mohammed, Abel Bobby and Luter Iyorhe starring. Last term, FC Taraba earned a point from this fixture but with Baraje in the saddle for Akwa United I do not think FC Taraba will leave Uyo with a point.
My prediction: 1-0
Sunshine Stars v Gabros FC [Akure Stadium]
The last time both teams faced off in this same fixture was in 12 years ago and Sunshine Stars won 1-0. I expect the Akure club to keep that streak going.
Gabros started on a winning note in their return to the top flight after 10 years. Defeating Warri WOlves 2-0 was quite a result for Gabros and that should toughen them for the challenge and rigours of the Glo Premier League. But Sunshine Stars will be a massive test for them especially with the return of Dele Olorundare and Ajani Ibrahim.
My prediction: 2-1
Kwara United v El-Kanemi Warriors [Kwara State Stadium]
I still do not understand how Kwara United failed to claim the full points at Dolphins. But they have the chance to do so when they play hosts to El-Kanemi. I am expecting Kwara United to go all guns blazing but it will be a close contest.
My prediction: 1-1
Enugu Rangers v Sharks [Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium]
This is another classic clash between two sides. Last season Rangers claimed the full points in this fixture by a goal. With the financial issues still bogging the Port Harcourt clubs, I am not expecting Rangers, who almost started the season winning a point at FC Taraba, to drop points.
My prediction: 2-0
*It was poor start to the season for The Predictor as he managed just two correct results including one exact score from the nine games of the opening day fixtures.

Giroud helps Arsenal bolster top four bid

Arsenal cemented their position in the Premier League's top four as Olivier Giroud's blistering strike inspired a 3-0 rout of West Ham on Saturday.
Arsene Wenger's third-placed side are aiming to qualify for the Champions League via a top-four finish for the 18th year in a row and they are well on course after a fifth successive league victory.
It was also the ideal preparation for next week's Champions League last 16 trip to Monaco, who hold a 3-1 lead from the first leg.
Giroud broke the deadlock seconds before the break as the France striker cut in from the right edge of the penalty area to lash an unstoppable left-footed shot into the far corner.
Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey got Arsenal's second, and his first since December, in the 81st minute when he played a one-two with Giroud and finished with aplomb.
Mathieu Flamini came off the bench to seal the points with an 84th minute goal that lifted the Gunners four points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United and six clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.
Aston Villa's revival under new manager Tim Sherwood gathered pace as they boosted their bid to avoid relegation with a crucial 4-0 win at fellow strugglers Sunderland.
Villa had scored only four away league goals all season, but they have been transformed since former Tottenham boss Sherwood took charge and have now won their last two league games to climb above Sunderland, who drop to fourth bottom after their sixth consecutive game without a win.
The visitors took the lead when Belgian striker Christian Benteke fired home in the 16th minute for his fifth goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, Gabriel Agbonlahor ran clear to slot home after Sunderland defender John O'Shea made a hash of dealing with Ciaran Clark's pass.
Agbonlahor netted again eight minutes before halftime, prompting a group of angry Sunderland fans to surround the home bench to berate boss Gus Poyet.
Stewards and police moved in to protect Poyet and the majority of the crowd were streaming towards the exit by the 44th minute as Benteke netted.
The chaos enveloping Sunderland was summed up when they played several minutes at the start of the second half down to 10 men after Seb Larsson emerged late from the dressing room.
RELEGATION MIRE
Crystal Palace pushed QPR deeper into the relegation mire with a 3-1 victory over their London rivals at Selhurst Park.
Alan Pardew's side swept into a three-goal lead by halftime thanks to strikes from Wilfried Zaha, James McArthur and Joel Ward.
Matt Phillips produced one of the goals of the season in the closing stages, but the winger's brilliant drive, from at least 40 yards out, came too late to spark a QPR fightback.
QPR's fourth successive Premier League loss extended their miserable run to nine defeats in their last 10 games, leaving the west Londoners third bottom and four points from safety.
Leicester wasted a chance to improve their survival hopes as 10-man Hull held on for a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium.
Hull had to play the final 18 minutes with 10 men after midfielder Tom Huddlestone was sent off for a second booking following his foul on Jamie Vardy.
But Nigel Pearson's bottom of the table team couldn't find a winner and they remain seven points from safety.
West Brom ground out a 1-0 win against Stoke at the Hawthorns.
The only goal arrived in the 19th minute when Craig Gardner's cross was met by Brown Ideye, who beat Stoke defender Phil Bardsley to head in his seventh goal of the season.
Later on Saturday, second-placed Manchester City will aim to close the gap on leaders Chelsea when they travel to Burnley.
Chelsea, currently five points clear, are in action at home to Southampton on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, Manchester United host Tottenham and Everton face Newcastle, while Liverpool travel to Swansea on Monday.

Stuttgart backs coach Stevens

VfB Stuttgart coach Huub Stevens is the right man for the job, the Bundesliga side said on Saturday, the day after a 4-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen left them rooted to the bottom of the table.
"We are still convinced that Huub Stevens is the right coach in our situation," club director Robin Dutt told Stuttgart's website (www.vfb.de).
"We need to build on the first half hour in which we have performed well against a Champions League team," he added.
"Even if the result was clear in the end, we have not lost the belief that we will achieve positive results soon "
Dutchman Stevens has produced two wins, five draws and six defeats in his 13 Bundesliga matches since replacing Armin Veh in November.
Stuttgart, who won the last of three Bundesliga titles in 2007, are bottom with 20 points from 25 games after a run of nine matches without a win and they are in danger of ending a 38-year stay in the top flight.

Sakala’s Aces end winless streak

Caretaker coach Jacob Sakala guided Black Aces to a 2-1 win over Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership match at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
In AmaZayoni’s first match since Clive Barker was relieved of his duties as head coach, second-half goals from Collins Mbesuma and Edwin Gyimah secured their first league win of 2015 and ended a run of eight games without a victory.
The first chance of the match went Aces’ way, with striker Tendai Ndoro shooting just wide from a quick turn and shot on the edge of the penalty area in the sixth minute, though goalkeeper Greg Etafia seemed to have it covered.
Ten minutes later Swallows missed out on a good opportunity for Luvhengo Mungomeni. The defender had a free header from Lerato Chabangu’s free kick delivery, but only succeeded in putting his effort over the bar when it needed a more subtle glance to either side.
On the half hour mark the home side created another opening, this time for Bhongolwethu Jayiya, but the former Bidvest Wits attacker struck his effort high over the crossbar. Six minutes later Collins Mbesuma showed quick feet to turn and get a shot away from inside the 18-yard area, but he too was unable to trouble Etafia.
Swallows coach Fani Madida was clearly concerned by his side’s lack of threat up front and he looked to boost his side’s attack by withdrawing makeshift midfielder Ashraf Hendricks and putting on Vuyisile Wana, making the change in injury time at the end of the first half. Early in the second he introduced Dikgang Mabalane for Guilio Guricich.
Midway through the second half, Aces substitute Dino Ndlovu almost produced a goal out of nothing with a fiercely struck long range effort that forced a sharp save out of Etafia. The resultant corner kick saw Mbesuma hand the hosts the lead, with his shot from close range cleared by Mabalane, but not before it crossed the goal line.
The goal gave AmaZayoni an injection of confidence and they cut Swallows’ defence to ribbons a few minutes later to create a chance for Aubrey Ngoma to double their advantage, but he shanked his left-footed shot high and wide.
Swallows almost restored parity in the 77th minute when Chabangu powered a header on target, but goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane made a fine low save to prevent the ball crossing the line in his first major involvement of the match.
However, just two minutes later, the Bafana Bafana ‘keeper flapped at a corner kick delivery that was flicked beyond his reach by one of his own defenders and Rudi Isaacs arrived at the back post to head home for 1-1.
The score remained level for only a short while before Aces reclaimed the lead in the 81st minute. This time Onyekachi Okonkwo provided a perfect cross from the right flank that Edwin Gyimah powered home with a header, 2-1.
Ndlovu almost made it 3-1 in the 87th minute with another beautifully struck shot - this one had the beating of Etafia, but rebounded off the crossbar.
The result sees Aces move up two positions on the log to 11th on 26 points. They are now four points clear of Swallows, who remain second-last (15th) with 22 points, just five ahead of AmaZulu.
Black Aces (0) 2 (Mbesuma 68’, Gyimah 81’)
Moroka Swallows (0) 1 (Isaacs 79’)
Teams:
Mpumalanga Black Aces: Mabokgwane, Kobola, Gyimah, Gumede, Nonyane, Jayiya (Ndlovu 53’), Okonkwo (Da Costa 84’), Ngalo, Ngoma, Ndoro, Mbesuma (Timm 79’)

Moroka Swallows: Etafia, Mungomeni, Cohen, Isaacs, Savic, Mandic, Baloyi, Hendricks (Wana 45+1’), Giuricich (Mabalane 48’), Chabangu, Obada (Tsutsulupa 61’)

Palace stroll piles on misery for QPR

Crystal Palace pushed QPR deeper into the relegation mire with a 3-1 victory over their London rivals at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
QPR's fourth successive Premier League loss extended their miserable run to nine defeats in their last 10 games, leaving the west Londoners third bottom and three points from safety.
While QPR have shown no signs of improvement since Chris Ramsey replaced Harry Redknapp as manager in February, Palace have been in the ascendency since Pardew took over from Neil Warnock.
The Eagles look certain to retain their top-flight status for another season after moving 11 points clear of the bottom three.
Shaun Wright-Phillips made his first Premier League start in more than two years, but the 33-year-old's presence failed to spark an improvement from QPR.
Palace took the lead in the 21st minute when Yannick Bolasie sent a low, driven cross to the far post, where Zaha turned home under pressure.
It was a goal that came at a cost, though, as the winger's momentum meant he suffered a nasty collision with the post, leading to several minutes of medical attention.
Pardew's team doubled their lead five minutes before halftime as Bolasie was again allowed to send over a cross and this time McArthur got ahead of Yun Suk-young to tap home from close range.
QPR's dismal collapse did not stop there.
Zaha was running riot and, despite being hassled by three QPR players, was still able to cut back for Ward, whose shot under pressure from Sandro snuck into the far corner.
With the points effectively in the bag, Palace rarely needed to break sweat in the second half before Phillips injected some life into proceedings, hitting a remarkable drive past Speroni from just inside the Eagles' half.

Polokwane City shinning again

Polokwane City bounced back to winning ways when they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Goals by captain Jabu Maluleke, striker Puleng Tlolane and midfielder Cole Alexander from both halves gave the Citizens the deserved win following their 5-0 defeat at the hand of current league champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.
Clinton Larsen’s men took the game to the hosts as early at the 10th minute when the Limpopo side conceded a free-kick and a corner. However, Keagan Ritchie could not cause troubles for City’s defence.
In the 26th minute Siwelele continued to pile pressure on Rise and Shine as Thapelo Morena sent in a cross, but Rendani Ndou made a clearance. Two minutes later, on-form midfielder Cole Alexander unleashed a powerful shot, but it went wide not giving Patrick Tignyemb problems.
With five minutes left to the interval, skipper Maluleke netted an opener for the hosts with a beautiful right foot finish, assisted by Kabelo Lichaba. Kostadin Papic’s men went to the tunnel enjoying the slender lead.
In the 64th minute, after coming from the halftime break, Rendani Ndou took a shot but his effort went wide of Tignyemb's posts. A minute later, Musa Nyatama took his shot and goalkeeper Modiri Marumo parried the effort to safety.
In the 69th minute, Tlolane found the net to increase his tally to nine goals in the league when he finished with his right foot.
Towards the dying minutes of the match, Alfred Ndengane went for glory and took a shot but it went off target, while City regained possession and Ndou gave Tignyemb something to work on but the Cameroonian safely held on.
With five minutes to wrap up the match, Alexander hammered the final nail in the coffin with a beautiful strike to give City a 3-0 lead, with an assist from substitute Sipho Jembula.
The victory takes the Polokwane side to position seven with 32 points, whiles the visitors are placed at sixth with 33 points.

Mancini expects keeper to bounce back

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini backed his error-prone goalkeeper on Saturday as his side attempt to bounce back from their midweek Europa League defeat by Wolfsburg.
Mancini's men take the lead in Germany through Rodrigo Palacio, only to lose the first-leg 3-1 with keeper Juan Pablo Carrizo blundering for all three of the strikes.
However, Mancini defended Carrizo, saying he would not be unduly punished for his shaky last-16 showing.
"Everyone can make mistakes" he told a news conference. "It's too bad as he had made two terrific saves in the first half. But he'll be back in goal on Thursday (for the second-leg)."
Mancini said he was now putting Europe to one side to concentrate on the league encounter against Cesena on Sunday (1945 GMT).
"We'll have four days to prepare for the return leg. We need to focus on Cesena who have been playing well as of late."
Inter are in ninth place, with 36 points from 26 matches in Serie A, and face a struggle to qualify again the for Europa League next season.
The Nerazzurri have conceded goals in six of their last seven league games and regular centre-back, Juan Jesus, will be on the sidelines as he serves a one-game suspension against Cesena.
Marco Andreolli is set to replace the Brazilian defender, with Nemanja Vidic inconsistent this season.
"Our best duo is formed by Juan Jesus and Andrea Ranocchia," Mancini said.
Cesena, who have 11 points from their last seven matches, are second bottom on 20 points, four adrift of Atalanta and safety.
Mancini also believes he has done nothing wrong in expressing a desire to sign Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who he coached while boss at the Etihad.
"I consider Yaya as a son," Mancini said. "I know he has a contract elsewhere but if there is a chance to sign him I'd love to coach him again."

Rampant Bayern hit four past Werder

Bayern Munich put the finishing touches on a perfect week's work as they defeated Werder Bremen 4-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to 14 points.
Pep Guardiola's side made it three wins in seven days, scoring 14 goals and conceding just one, as they not only padded their lead in the domestic flight but also qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals.
German international striker Thomas Mueller grabbed his fourth goal of the week with a left foot shot past Raphael Wolf to put the champions 1-0 in front on 24 minutes at the Weser-Stadion.
Austrian defender David Alaba then scored his second league goal of the season to cushion the advantage.
Polish international Robert Lewandowski added the gloss with two late goals to round out the scoring.
While Bremen, who came into the weekend five points behind the European places, toiled bravely they were unable to breach the goalline of Pepe Reina, who was standing in for first-choice 'keeper Manuel Neuer.
The absence of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who picked up knocks during the 7-0 rout of Shakhtar Donetsk in teh Champions League on Wednesday, had little effect as Bayern picked up their 20th victory in 25 league outings against just one defeat.
Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt consolidated their place in the upper half of the table with a routine 4-0 win over third-from-bottom Paderborn.
Alexander Meier got the home side on track with a goal after 27 minutes before Marc Stendera, Stefan Aigner and Nelson Haedo Valdez also got on the scoresheet in a feisty afternoon encounter that featured eight yellow cards.
Mainz picked up a crucial 2-0 victory over Augsburg, thanks to a dinstinctive Asian flavour, as they eased their relegation fears.
Shinji Okazaki added to his record as the highest Japanese scorer in Bundesliga history, with the opener on 32 minutes, before former South Korea captain Koo Ja-cheol guaranteed the points in the final minute.
Hertha Berlin missed the chance for three valuable points as they were deprived victory in the final minute by a Joel Matip equaliser for Schalke.
A see-saw match finished 2-2 in the capital.
Eugen Polankski struck either side of halftime for Hoffenheim as they boosted their European ambitions for next season with a 3-0 home win over 10-man Hamburg.
Jaroslav Drobny conceded the penalty that led to a straight red card and Polanski's opener before the 28-year-old Polish midfielder helped seal the win with his second eight minutes from time.
Sebastian Rudy added a third to the delight of the home fans in the dying minutes.
On Friday, Bayer Leverkusen cantered to a 4-0 win over Stuttgart and climbed to third place ahead of idle Borussia Moenchengladbach.
In the final match on Saturday, resurgent Borussia Dortmund are at home to Cologne, ahead of their Champions League tie against Juventus on Wednesday, while on Sunday, Europa League hopefuls Wolfsburg await second-from-bottom Freiburg.
Finally, Moenchengladbach host Hanover in the ultimate match of the weekend.

Pirates defeat URA in Confed Cup

Orlando Pirates got their CAF Confederation Cup campaign off to a winning start as they defeated Uganda Revenue Authority 2-1 in a first round, first leg match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Buccaneers did not put in the most convincing performance. They will nonetheless be happy to hold a lead heading into the second leg, though conceding a late away goal was a definite disappointment for Eric Tinkler’s team.
Pirates opened the scoring through a most unlikely source, as defender Rooi Mahamutsa cracked home a magnificent long-range shot in the fourth minute. The centre-back’s effort flew into the top corner and gave URA’s goalkeeper no chance whatsoever.
But if the Buccaneers thought that brilliant goal would set the tone for the remainder of the game, they were sadly mistaken. The Ugandan visitors proved to be a real handful for the hosts, playing some slick attacking football that had Pirates’ defence scrambling throughout.
Though URA managed just one shot on target in the first half – a 25th minute effort from Feni Ali Mohamoud that was easily saved by Brighton Mhlongo – they were arguably the better team and would have felt they deserved more for their efforts than heading into the change rooms at halftime 1-0 down.
URA continued to boss the game in the early stages of the second half, though a tactical switch from Pirates which saw Thandani Ntshumayelo introduced to midfield (he replaced striker Lennox Bacela) saw the South African side enjoy a better balance to their play.
As the half wore on and URA began to take a few more risks in terms of committing players forward, more space opened up for Pirates to attack on the counter. The Soweto giants duly took advantage in the 85th minute when Oupa Manyisa teed up Lehlohonolo Majoro, who finished beautifully from outside the box to double his side’s advantage.
Yet there was to be a twist in the tale late on, as Pirates defender Happy Jele scored an unfortunate own goal in injury time. The right-back was forced to head a cross into his own net under immense pressure from a URA attacker.
Orlando Pirates (1) 2 (Mahamutsa 4’, Majoro 85’)
Uganda Revenue Authority (0) 1 (Jele 90+3’ og)

Orlando Pirates: Mhlongo, Jele, Mahamutsa, Sangweni, Matlaba, Makola (Rakhale 64’), Masalesa, Manyisa, Myeni, Erasmus (Majoro 77’), Bacela (Ntshumayelo 58’)

Atletico fourth after draw at Espanyol

Atletico Madrid remain fourth in La Liga as they had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Espanyol after having defender Miranda sent-off in the first-half.
A third consecutive draw in the league means the champions now trail third-placed Valencia by a point and could be nine points off the top by the end of the day if Barcelona beat Eibar later on Saturday.
Diego Simeone's protégés were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time at the end of an uneventful first period when Miranda led with his elbow in an aerial challenge with Abraham.
Despite being a man light, Atletico still created the better chances after the break and were desperately unlucky when referee Inaki Vicandi Garrido ruled out Antoine Griezmann's sweetly struck volley from Diego Godin's knock-down for an apparent push by the Uruguayan.
Raul Garcia then had the best chance of the match 12 minutes from time when he was played in by Griezmann, but Kiko Casilla made a brilliant save low to his right to deny the Spanish international.
Atletico's attention now turns to overcoming a 1-0 first leg deficit when they host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ideye header gives West Brom victory

West Bromich Albion moved comfortably clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Hawthorns on Saturday.
A first-half strike from Brown Ideye sufficed to give all three points to the Baggies who were in command early on only for Stoke to dominate the latter stages of the match.
West Brom coach Tony Pullis could have been forgiven for having mixed sentiments before the match having spent eight successful years at Stoke.
But his men piled on the pressure from the start, Stéphane Sessegnon and Saido Berahino both having early shots at goals.
The Baggies deservedly took the lead after 19 minutes when Ideye rose above the Stoke defence to power a Craig Gardney cross into the bottom left corner of the net.
Darren Fletcher and Berahino both came close to doubling the home side's lead before Peter Crouch blasted one over as Stoke tried valiantly to get back into the game.
West Brom had kept five clean sheets in their last six home games at The Hawthorns underlining the size of the task facing Mark Hughes' men in the second half.
Their hopes were briefly raised after 55 minutes when outstanding goalkeeper Ben Foster was injured and had to be replaced by Boaz Myhill.
But shortly after that, Stoke winger Victor Moses was also forced to leave with an injury, Marko Arnautovic taking over.
The visitors were now on top and forced a succession of corners which came to naught before Fletcher and Berahino had shots blocked at the other end.
Crouch had a header well saved by Myhill as time ran out for Stoke who failed to repeat their 2-1 win in the same fixture last year.
The win moved West Brom on to 33 points, well clear of the drop zone, but still nine points adrift of Stoke.
