Captain Ichaka Diarra netted a fantastic header in the 18th minute past a hapless Ghana custodian Seidu Mutawakilu to inspire Mali to a 1-0 win at the ongoing Caf Under-20 Africa Youth Championships at the Stade Caroline Faye M’Bour in Senegal on Sunday evening.
The Malians continued to create chances upfront and piled pressure on Ghana but the latter held on as the first 45 minutes ended with Diarra’s strike being the difference.
In the second half, Ghanaian coach Sellas Tetteh introduced playmaker Yaw Yeboah and Samuel Tetteh who replaced Jonathan Osabutey and Asiedu Attobrah respectively with the hope of turning their fortunes around but the Malians displayed character to keep them at bay.
Victory ensured the Malians finished top of Group B with nine points and unbeaten in the group stages following their opening 1-0 win over Zambia and a 2-1 triumph over South Africa’s Amajita.
Mali will face hosts Senegal in the second semifinals on March 19 at the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor while the Flying Eagles of Nigeria will be up against Ghana on March 18 at the same venue.
All four sides have already qualified for this year’s Fifa Under-20 World Cup slated for May 30-June 20 in New Zealand.
