Hearts of Oak stage comeback

Gilbert Fiamenyo’s experience proved vital as Hearts of Oak staged a second half comeback to beat Olympique de Ngor 2-1 in Accra.
The Phobians were in high spirits to bury their Caf Confederation Cup round of 32 clash with the Senegalese side right from the first leg but their output in the first half nearly turned their hopes into a nightmare.
A generally lackluster display in the opening half saw the visitors take a well-deserved lead in the 33rd minute. Winger Alioune Badara Fall pounced onto a beautiful pass from midfield across the Hearts penalty area, drove past a couple of Hearts defenders before directing home the ball past goalkeeper Soulama who had no chance to stop the opening goal.
Prior to the opener, Hearts strikers Selasi Adjei and Komi Foovi Aguidi had missed a couple of glorious chances. Just before half time, the former had yet another opportunity to pull level but his lob over goalkeeper Diallo Mouhaneth saw two Ngor defenders recovering well to clear their lines.
The start of the second half saw the quick introduction of two experienced legs – Kofi Abanga for Emmanuel Laryea in midfield and the not-so-fit Gilbert Fiamenyo for Selasi Adjei in attack. Their introduction brought some urgency into the play of the Ghanaians with Fiamenyo getting into the thick of affairs in helping to get the equalizer before finishing off an intelligent move to give Hearts the lead.
Fiamenyo was clipped from behind as he dribbled through Olympique de Ngor defence and was deservedly awarded a foul. Left-back Shaun October beautifully took the resulting free-kick which came off the crossbar but a sneaking Foovi Aguidi headed the ball from rebound to level matters on 63 minutes.
Hearts of Oak continued to control the game and piled more pressure in search for the lead and were rewarded with a sweet left foot tap-in from Gilbert Fiamenyo in the 84th minute. The bulky attacker beat the offside trap to feed on an inswinging cross from the right to give the Ghanaians the match winner.- 2-1.
Olympique de Ngor will host the second leg encounter on the weekend of March 20-22.
