Barca seek approval to sign defender

Barcelona will ask world football body Fifa if they can sign a replacement for Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to Catalan media reports on Friday.
Barca are banned by Fifa from signing any players in the next two transfer windows, due to having underage foreign players in their youth scheme.
However, papers Sport and Mundo Deportivo claimed that the club will ask Fifa if they can sign a defender to replace Vermaelen, who will shortly undergo hamstring surgery and be out of action for around four months.
The Catalan papers point out that the rules of the Spanish federation would permit Barca to sign - without having to wait for the January transfer window - a replacement player who is currently out of contract.
Barca will reportedly ask Fifa for permission to do so. Vermaelen, 29, was signed in summer by Barca from Arsenal for 15 million euros (18.7 million dollars). He has still not made his debut for the Catalans in an official competition, and has been voted the club's worst ever signing in several online polls.
On Friday Sport asked Barca's sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta whether he was going to resign because of the Vermaelen signing. Zubizarreta has become an unpopular figure at Barca because of his allegedly ineffective transfer policy since taking the job in 2010.
