Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart on Tuesday appointed Dutchman Huub Stevens as coach to replace Armin Veh.
It is the second time Stevens, 60, has joined Stuttgart after a two-month stint in charge towards the end of last season.
He is appointed with immediate effect and takes charge of training later in the day, the club said.
Veh resigned on Monday after the team lost 1-0 at home to Augsburg to remain bottom of the Bundesliga.
Stevens is a Bundesliga veteran who had two spells at Schalke and was also in charge of Hertha Berlin, Cologne and SV Hamburg.
He won the Uefa Cup with Schalke in 1997 but his second spell at the club ended in dismissal in December 2012.
He joined Greek side PAOK in June 2013 but left the following March when he then succeeded Thomas Schneider at relegation-threatened Stuttgart.
It was a short-term contract, with Stevens stepping down following a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on the last day of the season, having secured Bundesliga safety for the club with a 15th-place finish.
In a statement at the time, Stevens said: "I have decided to take the break now that I originally wanted to take after (leaving) PAOK.
"I came to Stuttgart with a clear goal, Bundesliga safety, and the agreement was quite clearly for 10 games."
Stuttgart have given no immediate details of the terms of Stevens' new contract. The coach was to be formally presented later in the day.
Stuttgart have won only twice in the league this season and have collected just one point from the last six games. They were also eliminated in the first round of the German Cup.
Veh, 53, returned to Stuttgart from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer but failed to recreate the form of his previous spell with the club, in which he led the team to the Bundesliga title in 2007.
