Burkina Faso have made an inauspicious exit from the Afcon purely because of bad luck.
That's according to coach Paul Put, whose Stallions had been seen as possible champions after reaching the final of the last competition.
But they had a bad tournament - lost 2-0 to Gabon in their opener, drew 0-0 with Equatorial Guinea and then lost their final game 2-1 to Congo-Brazzaville.
Burkina Faso finished bottom of Group A with just a point, two less than third-placed Gabon. Congo won the group with seven points, two more than second-placed Equatorial Guinea.
"It is difficult to explain. Luck was not on our side in all the three games. If you see the chances we have created in all the games and even today. We had three good chances but luck was not on our side," the Belgian said to the hosts in Bata.
"We were knocking on the door but did not enter. The two teams people were expecting to qualify from this group, Burkina Faso and Gabon failed to qualify. Burkina Faso and Gabon has the same quality. There is still a long way to go."
It is not clear if the Belgian, who is blaming ill luck not for the first time in this Afcon, will keep his job.
