The image of John Boye kissing a bundle of dollars in Brazil made him enemies for months, but he may have paid his debt.
The defender's crucial equalizer against South Africa on Tuesday drew mixed reactions from Ghanaians. For some, his striker-like goal wiped his slate clean and for others, it was just part payment.
With Ghana staring elimination from the ongoing Afcon following an earlier South African opener, Boye had been brought on by Grant to shore things up at the back.
But on 73 minutes, the Turkey-based man joined a flowing move and executed a powerful half volley on his weaker left foot.
"I came from the bench to score is what happened. You all saw it," a calm Boye told AllSports after the game.
"I am just happy to have scored because we were in a difficult situation and the chance presented itself. It is also nice for Andre to have scored the winner; that’s the most important thing for us."
For all who thought it was a fluke, the defender issued a gentle.
"Last time I scored a goal was in 2013 at the AFCON so it is nothing new. I am glad to have been able to contribute."
The Black Stars, after topping Group C, will play their quarter-final game on Sunday in Malabo.
