Polokwane City are ready for their MultiChoice Diski Challenge quarterfinal encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns, their confident coach Junior Bhengu revealed.
City booked their spot in the knockout round by finishing third in Group A. Sundowns claimed the second place in Group B, to set up the clash that promises to be a thriller.
The two teams meet at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban on Sunday in the final quarterfinal clash.
“We opened as early as the 4th of January, it’s been going very well. The team has been doing well, we hope we will click when we are in Durban. We are calling the people of KZN to come and watch this team playing against Sundowns,” Bhengu said.
The young Brazilians won four, drew twice and also suffered a single defeat in their seven clashes. But Bhengu says it wasn’t easy to spot much from their opponents in the group stage.
“It’s very difficult to pick something from Sundowns, because they were changing the team every week. It’s very difficult to say this is what they are doing, sometimes you see Anthony Laffor and sometimes you see Lebogang Mokoena – the next time you don’t see them. It’s a very tricky situation.
“The only thing that we know is that it’s a team that likes to play football like we do. It’s going to be a very entertaining match,” the former Bidvest Wits’ defender explained.
City boost a number of promising youngsters in Sibusiso Msibi, Sakhile Ngubo, Ayanda Lubelo and Mothusi Gopane, who is the tournament’s top scorer with five goals. That’s the reason the coach decided against making any changes to his squad.
“We have the same squad, I don’t have any new players, it’s still the same.”
After scoring the highest number of goals (16) in the group matches, City will look to take their performance into the next round in order to be able to progress even further. That’s something that Bhengu thinks will be achieved by focusing on one game at a time.
“We are not talking about it at this stage, we are not talking about the semifinals, we throwing everything at the next match. There’s sides like Sundowns and Pirates whichare big teams, but that’s not our focus. So we are not talking anything about the semifinals, we are just focusing on playing football and playing well – it’s very important.
“Remember the late state president once said, “after climbing one great hill, you find that there are still more to climb,”
“I think we have already climbed the great hill, but there are still many more to climb. That’s while we looking forward to each, because to play football that’s what it’s all about,” he concluded.
