Following the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup and the Fifa international window, South Africa’s National First Division returns to action this coming weekend with a full set of fixtures.
Round 23 of the second tier league begins on Friday afternoon at the Philipi Stadium, where Cape Town All Stars and Santos will meet for a ‘Mother City’ derby. The former is looking to boost their hopes of promotion, while the latter is aiming to climb back into the top half of the table.
On Saturday, all eyes will be on leaders Golden Arrows as coach Shaun Bartlett takes his team to Witbank Spurs. Abafana Bes’thende currently enjoy a three-point lead over second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu, who face a potentially tricky away match against Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium.
Third-placed Jomo Cosmos (five points adrift of Arrows) will have to wait until Sunday for a chance to match or better the top two’s results, as they host relegation-threatened Garankuwa United at the Vaal University of Technology.
The other matches on the card see Nedbank Cup quarterfinalists Black Leopards and Vasco Da Gama face matches at home to Royal Eagles and away to FC Cape Town respectively, while African Warriors host Baroka FC and Milano United welcome bottom-of-the-log Maluti FET College.
