Rwanda coach Johnny McKinstry has revealed that he is satisfied with the overall performance of the Amavubi Stars despite the 2-0 defeat to Zambia in an international friendly match played in Lusaka last Sunday.
“We had a short amount of time to train with the players but I felt that they took up some ideas because the Zambian team were struggling to create opportunities in the first half and were actually booed by their fans at half time,” explained McKinstry.
“Playing away is always difficult in Africa but we managed to contain them in the first half and did well until we conceded the first goal.
"Central defender Ismael Nshutiyamagara had attained a lower back strain and was off receiving treatment while James Tubane waited on the touch line to replace and Zambia with a lot of experience capitalized on us being down to 10 men and they took the lead.
"It was down to our inexperience of not knowing to play with a man down but now we have learnt from our mistake,” added the optimistic McKinstry.
The Irishman, however, admitted that he was disappointed with the second goal because his players lost possession in midfield which granted Chipolopolo substitute Allan Mukuka, who had earlier provided an assistant for Rainford Kalaba for the first goal, to net the home side’s second.
McKinstry admitted that the Amavubi did not have many scoring options but hailed the players for holding onto the ball. “It has to be on purpose (possessing the ball). We have to create this atmosphere and take our goal scoring opportunities. Rwanda will face South Africa in an international friendly on July 25 in Johannesburg.
