Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Polokwane City in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge clash, their coach Alex Bapela says they’ve set their sights going all the way in the competition.
Sundowns finished second in Group B while Polokwane claimed the third spot in Group A. They face off at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban on Sunday.
“The preparations have been going well, even though we have three players in the national Under-20 team. You must remember that everybody else is playing Under-23s but we are playing with Under-19s.
“So three of our boys are with the national team and the seniors boys are not around, they are in camp with the first team as well. But we have about 16, 17 players who’ve been training heavily since January 5th,”Bapela said.
Polokwane enjoyed an impressive run in the group stage, where they won four of their matches and scored 16 goals – which were the highest scored by any team. They will be determined to do well in their clash against Sundowns.
“I’ve been busy watching them and I was lucky enough to witness them because I watched them in Cape Town and Pretoria live when they were playing.
“Now we’ve got their tapes, we are watching how they play and how to plan their downfall,” the coach revealed.
Sundowns gave an impressive show in their matches, winning four, drawing twice and losing only once. Their coach is aware that the boys will have to give more good performances to pass the quarterfinal round.
“Of course we want to win the cup, it will be good for our young boys to win it at an early age. The future of Sundowns will be bright if these boys at this young age can win a cup like this one. So they will be used to winning. You must remember that winning becomes a habit once you start winning, especially at a young age.
“So we are just preparing, hoping that everything will be fine. But looking at things now, everything looks like it’s on the right track,” the former Sundowns’ midfield maestro continued.
Bapela was also impressed by his youngsters in the matches they played to prepare for the Diski Challenge showdown.
“We recently played SuperSport United and lost 3-2, but they played senior players as well and we only played the guys who are here. So it shows that we are doing well.”
“We also played friendly game against a team from Tembisa, an Under-23 team and we beat them 4-0. That shows that everything is up to scratch,” concluded the coach they nicknamed “Benz” in his playing days.
