Round 21 of the National First Division this past weekend saw Golden Arrows reclaim their place at the top of the log standings, while basement club Maluti FET suffered a heavy defeat to see their relegation worries deepen.
The key match of the weekend was the top-of-the-table clash between Arrows and Cosmos at Chatsworth on Saturday afternoon, and Abafana Bes’thende leapfrogged the Gauteng team thanks to a 3-1 victory.
Goals from Prince Nxumalo, Andile Fikizolo and Deon Hotto sealed the win for Shaun Bartlett’s side, which now enjoys a two-point lead over second-placed Ezenkosi.
Third-placed Thanda Royal Zulu are just a point further back, having missed out on the chance to close in on the top of the log after being held to a 1-1 draw by Santos, while Cape Town All Stars are still hovering ominously on the fringes of the title race after a 2-0 home win over Royal Eagles.
Milano United were held to an entertaining 2-2 draw by Baroka FC, while Black Leopards edged Vasco Da Gama 1-0 at home to move to within four points of the top four. FC Cape Town battled to a 2-2 draw at home to strugglers Witbank Spurs.
The bottom two clubs both suffered defeats on Sunday, with Garankuwa United going down 3-1 away to African Warriors (who have opened a gap of nine points between themselves and the bottom two), while basement side Maluti FET were hammered 5-0 by Highlands Park.
