Polokwane City reached the MultiChoice Diski Challenge quarterfinals after finishing third in Group A with 12 points.
They were the highest scoring team in the group stage, netting 16 goals and also produced the top goal scorer Mothusi Gopane, who found the back of the net five times.

SuperSport United 0-1 Polokwane
21 September - Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch, Cape Town
Polokwane went into the match as a relatively unknown side, which was a real test for their opponents SuperSport United. They quickly showed their qualities as the likes of central-midfielder Sibusiso Msibi, wingers Ayanda Lubelo and Mothusi Gopane frustrated United. City finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Lubelo netted from a spot kick, beating Amajita goalkeeper DumisaniMsibi and helped his side claim the three points.
Polokwane 2-3 Ajax Cape Town
24 September - Nike Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto
Their next encounter was a five-goal thriller against Ajax Cape Town. Sakhile Ngubo gave City a 1-0 halftime lead, after scoring in the 24th minute. Noah Sadaoui equalised for Ajax nine minutes after the break, before Sello Matjila restored City’s lead fifteen minutes from time. Justin Jacobus brought the Cape side level three minutes later and Sadaoui completed his brace in injury time to sink City.
Bloemfontein Celtic 3-1 Polokwane
4 October - Siwelele Park in Bloemfontein, Free State
Polokwane then travelled to Bloemfontein Celtic, who had thumped Moroka Swallows 8-0, for their third match. They found Celtic in an uncompromising mood as they surged to a comfortable lead with a hat-trick from Lethola Mofokeng in the first half. Brian Dolama got City’s consolation goal in the 75th minute.
Polokwane 2-1 Moroka Swallows
11 October - Tuks Stadium, Pretoria
City ended their two-match losing streak against Swallows in their next match in Pretoria. Diski’s leading goal scorer Mothusi Gopane opened his account in the 18th minute, but Nduduzo Ngobese got the equaliser for the young Birds in the 36th minute. Sakhile Ngubo found the winner, a minute after the break, with his second goal of the tournament.
Polokwane 3-2 University of Pretoria
12 October - Tuks fields, Pretoria
The following day was also a good one for Rise and Shine as they registered another victory against hosts University of Pretoria. Gopane opened the scoring in the 20th minute and City held on to the lead until the break. The flood gates were then opened twenty minutes from time when Denver Mukamba got Tuks the equaliser. Dikgang Ngcobo thought he had secured the three points for the home side when he netted with five minutes remaining on the clock. But substitute BonganiNxumalo replied with two goals in two minutes to give City their second-straight win.
Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Polokwane
19 October - Nike Training Centre, Soweto
Polokwane faced another stern test in the sixth round against Kaizer Chiefs, who were desperate for a win after losing to Celtic and drawing against Swallows in their previous matches. After a goalless first half, Mpho Khumalo gave Chiefs the lead in the 52nd minute. Mduduzi Nyandeni then secured the win for the young Amakhosi when he netted eight minutes from time, before Gopane reduced the deficit in the 86th minute.
Polokwane 6-2 Maritzburg United
25 October - Noordelikes Rugby Club, Polokwane
With nothing less than a win needed in their final match to ensure they qualify for the quarterfinals, City youngsters duly delivered – producing their best performance against Maritzburg United. A brace by Gopane and another goal from Lubelo gave them a 3-0 lead going into halftime. Sakhile Ngubo netted in either side of Lubelo’s second strike to give Polokwane a 6-2 win.
