Zimbabwe international midfielder Danny Phiri is hoping to finally seal a move to South Africa when he attends trials with Free State Stars this week.
Phiri, who captains Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League side Chicken Inn has had a number of near misses when it comes to moves to South Africa in the past, but will hope to impress namesake and Ea Lla Koto coach Kinnah Phiri while in the Free State.
The defensive midfielder, who signed a new three-year contract with Chicken Inn in November, will reportedly cost Stars R500 000 if they decide to make a move for him.
Phiri has previously had trials with National First Division side FC Cape Town and Polokwane City, but neither of those moves materialised.
Meanwhile, coach Phiri says he is pleased with the condition of his players since their return from the festive season break as they look forward to a friendly match against Lesotho on Sunday.
He says the side have been working hard to ensure they tighten up defensively in the second half of the season, with only Polokwane City having conceded more than their 26 goals in the league campaign.
“We have worked a lot on defending and being more aggressive when we are attacking,” Phiri said on his club’s website.
“According to our programme we will have a friendly match on Sunday against Lesotho and when we come back we will continue with our regular training and then look at the friendly match that we will play next Sunday and see which areas we can improve.
“Ahead of the Lesotho match we are going to look more at what we have done during training so far, like recovery, defending as a team and attacking as team and also look at some of the combinations.”
Having kept just a single clean-sheet so far this season, Phiri says they are confident of an improved showing when the league resumes.
“I think we are feeling better. Since we have come back our training has been very good. The whole of this week, the players have been performing very well and we have addressed certain things which needed to be addressed. Some of those things we are still addressing,”
