Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba has said his side will not add to the numbers at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
The former Under-23 coach guided his side to a near-perfect campaign in the Afcon qualifiers amassing an impressive 12 points to top Group A that includes Congo, Nigeria and Sudan.
The South Africans rounded off their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Nigeria in the final day qualifying match on Wednesday at the Akwa Ibom Stadium in Uyo.
AFC Bournemouth striker Tokelo Rantie scored a brace for his side while second-half substitute striker Sone Aluko evened the score with a brace that counted for nothing for Nigeria.
Mashaba said his side were damn unlucky not to have defeated Nigeria in their own backyard for the first time in a competitive football event.
“Our two goals actually frustrated the Super Eagles and prevented them from playing their normal game in the crucial encounter. I think luck was just against us as we would’ve for once comfortably run away with a clear victory.
“However, the 2-2 draw is still a good result by all standards as we proved that the players, who are mostly domestic lads, can compete with any side.
“I’m quite confident that South Africa won’t add to the numbers in Equatorial Guinea but will compete for the title.
“We’ll certainly get prepared for the championship after we would’ve organised two or three practice matches.
“We’ve struggled in the past to qualify and have struggled to excel at the Afcon proper but Equatorial Guinea will change all that for us,” said Mashaba
