After match day five in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, seven teams in the form of South Africa, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Tunisia and Senegal added their name to Algeria’s for the tournament proper in Equatorial Guinea next year.
In Group A, South Africa qualified for the tournament with a 2-1 win over Sudan thanks to goals from Thulani Serero and Tokelo Rantie. The win combined with Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Congo sees Bafana uncatchable at the summit of Group A.
South Africa have 11 points from five games, followed by Nigeria and Congo with seven points each while Sudan are on three points. A win for Nigeria on Wednesday over Bafana would guarantee them qualification for the Tournament in Equatorial Guinea next year.
In Group B, Algeria maintained their 100 percent win record with a 3-1 victory over Ethiopia while Malawi beat Mali 2-0 to keep their hopes of qualification alive.
Algeria top the group with 15 points, having already qualified for the tournament proper in the last round of matches, while Mali and Malawi will be fighting it out for second spot on Wednesday, both currently on six points in the group with Ethiopia on three points.
In Group C, Burkina Faso and Gabon made sure of their places in Equatorial Guinea next year. Burkina Faso beat Lesotho 1-0 to top the group with ten points from five games while a 0-0 draw for Gabon against Angola sees them on nine points. Angola, third with five points, and Lesotho, last with two points, cannot qualify for the African Cup of Nations tournament.
In Group D, Cameroon qualified for the tournament proper with a 1-0 win over DR Congo while Cote’ d’Ivoire increased their chances of qualification with a 5-1 drubbing of Sierra Leone.
Cameroon top the group with 13 points from five games, followed by Ivory Coast in second on nine points and DR Congo in third with six points while Sierra Leone have one point. Dr congo will have to beat Sierra Leone convincingly on Wednesday and hope Cameroon do them a favour against the Ivoirians if they are to qualify.
In Group E, Uganda shocked Ghana with a 1-0 win which keeps their hopes of qualification alive while Guinea beat Togo 4-1. The string of results sees Ghana at the top of Group E with eight points, followed by Uganda on seven points, Togo on six points and Guinea on four. Anyone of the four teams could still qualify.
In Group F, Cape Verde qualified for Afcon 2015 with a 3-1 win over Niger while Zambia beat Mozambique 1-0 to set up an exciting final matchday in the group. Cape Verde top the standings with 12 points form five games, followed by Zambia on eight points and Mozambique on five points. Niger only have two points to their name.
In Group G, Tunisia and Senegal qualified for the tournament proper next year. Despite drawing 0-0 with Botswana, Tunisia still top the group with 11 points from five games. Senegal’s 1-0 win over Egypt sees them in second place with ten points. Egypt are in third with six points, followed by Botswana with only a point to their name.
