Ghana’s senior women team, the Black Queens, defeated their counterparts from Zimbabwe 2-1 in an All-Africa Games qualifier on Saturday.
A dominant display yet few goals for the Black Queens saw the Mighty Warriors grab an important away goal from a sweet free-kick strike from Emmaculate Msipa in the 72nd minute.
Ghana were cruising with a two goal lead amidst many unutilized chances due to poor finishing.
Agnes Aduako scored the opening goal for the Black Queens from the spot after Zimbabwe defender Patience Mujuru was penalised for bringing down Diana Ankomah in the penalty area. Aduako stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way for the 29th minute opener.
Striker Samira Suleman replaced injured Diana Ankomah eight minutes into second half and made her presence felt just three minutes after, by slamming home the ball after racing through from the left flank – 2-0.
The visitors put up a strong fight after going two goals down and expertly recorded a vital away goal from a free-kick earned by Erina Jeke, Ghana goalkeeper Fafali Dumashi had no answer to the well-taken kick by Msipa.
The second leg of this final round of qualifiers to the 2015 All-Africa Games comes off in Harare on April 4.
