Arrows win to stay top in NFD

Golden Arrows took another step toward winning the National First Division title this past weekend when they thrashed Maluti FET College 5-2 at the Charles Mopeli Stadium.
With second-placed Jomo Cosmos held to a 1-1 draw away to Vasco Da Gama in Cape Town and third-placed Thanda Royal Zulu not in action, Shaun Bartlett’s league leaders opened up a three-point advantage with their big win in the Free State on Saturday.
Abafana Bes’thende had to work hard, however, twice coming from behind to claim the victory. Chris Katjiukua, Andile Fikizolo, Omar Hendricks, Mabhuti Khenyeza and Prince Nxumalo all scored for Arrows, while the result confirmed Maluti’s relegation back to the third tier.
Black Leopards’ promotion hopes suffered a blow when they were beaten 1-0 at Highlands Park, with Mothobi Mvala scoring the decisive goal, while Cape Town All Stars took advantage to shift up to fourth place and open up a three-point lead over the Limpopo side with their 3-2 home win over derby rivals Milano United on Sunday.
Garankuwa United beat Baroka FC 2-1 away from home but remain second from bottom, while Witbank Spurs moved up to 13th with a 2-1 win at Santos and Royal Eagles held 14th-placed African Warriors to a goalless draw.
The next full round of NFD action will be played this coming weekend, though Arrows first have a chance to further increase their lead when they host Vasco in a catch-up game at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
