Vipers, URA share spoils

Frank Kalanda levelled for URA three minutes from full time to deny Vipers all three points in a Uganda Premier League (UPL) match played at Buikwe Ground on Tuesday.
The log leaders, who now top on 53 points (with six games to go) – two ahead of SC Villa and three in front of KCC, went behind early in the first half with Milos Illic scoring for URA.
The Serbian’s free kick was first impeded by the wall but Illic was on hand to volley the rebound into the top right corner of Vipers goalkeeper’s net.
Vipers got the chance to level after the break when Sam Sekitto was adjudged to have handled in the forbidden area but Mike Mutyaba had the resultant spot kick saved by the visitors’ goalkeeper.
Farouk Miya, however, saved Mutyaba the blushes by heading in the rebound for his eighth goal of the season.
Vipers had the momentum now. Their continued verve saw them grab their second, Joseph Mpande crossing for Mutyaba to connect home from the near post on 70 minutes.
This surely should win it for Vipers and see them establish a sizeable gap at the summit! But not when Kalanda is on the pitch.
The striker, Kalanda, intervened to ensure spoils were shared. He chest-controlled Saidi Kyeyune’s in-swinging free kick from the left inside the area – his back to goal – before turning in a whirl to volley home his eight goal of the season.
The stalemate between the two giants happened on a day league managers awarded Villa yet another three points and as many goals from the boardroom.
UPL CEO Bernard Bainamani released a circular on Tuesday reading: “During match #182 URA FC vs SC Villa that was played on Friday 10th April 2015 in Lugazi, player Kyeyune Saidi was fielded by URA FC and yet he had accumulated 3(three) yellow cards from previous games thus making him ineligible for the above mentioned match.
“Article 20(8) of Fufa Competitions Rules 2014/2015 provides that, ‘a player who accumulates three (3) bookings (cautions) in a league competition shall automatically become an ineligible player for the next one physically played match.”
The statement adds: “Article 19(20) of Fufa Competitions Rules 2014/2015 provides that, ‘a Club that fields an ineligible player in a Fufa Competition Match shall lose the match by forfeiture to the opposing team.’ Accordingly, URA FC loses match #182 by three goals and three points.”
Villa had already been beneficiaries of boardroom points on three occasions this season. Six points were awarded in the home and away ties against Express and three more in another aborted game against Sadolin.
All the said matches did not end because of crowd violence which the league ruled that was the works of Villa’s opponents.
The said match between URA and Villa ended 1-1, meaning that Villa now move to 51 points up from 49.
Elsewhere, SCVU and Lweza, and Sadolin Paints versus Bul played out 1-1 draws while Umar Kasumba scored his 13th goal of the campaign as Police beat Rwenshama 1-0. Innocent Asiimwe scored in Simba’s 1-0 win over Entebbe.
UPL RESULTS
Vipers 2-2 URA
SCVU 1-1 Lweza
Rwenshama 0-1 Police
Sadolin Paints 1-1 Bul
Simba 1-0 Entebbe
