With the National First Division season entering the final stretch, dropped points at this stage of the campaign could prove disastrous for those sides still chasing promotion.
Black Leopards find themselves three points behind third-placed Thanda Royal Zulu, but are effectively a further point back because of inferior goal-difference.
With four games remaining, that makes Saturday’s home clash with Santos a must-win for Zeca Marques’ side, who have stumbled in recent weeks after a remarkable run of form from the beginning of the year.
It is a point acknowledged by the coach, but he says there is no panic in the camp ahead of the visit of the Team of Choice.
“One or two games won’t make us a bad team. We are still playing well and creating chances, it’s just that we need to focus a bit more and realise what is at stake,” Marques said.
“The players just need to be a little more alert. The work ethic and everything is good, but sometimes goals are just scored from mistakes.
“We will approach the game exactly as we have been doing. We can’t start with a new recipe now. We have played and won nine games with that recipe. I’m happy. We just have to do the right things on the field and the results will come.”
Marques says the team is still very much in the hunt for a play-off place.
“I think we have to keep believing that a finish in the top three is possible. There is still a lot happening and a few games to play. We just have to keep going and focus on what we are doing,” he said.
