Sundowns, Pelembe in deadlock

Negotiations with Elias Pelembe over a new contract are stalled, admitted Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, with the likelihood one of the country’s highest paid players is headed out of the door at the end of the season.
“They are still stalling. I think they’ve reached a stalemate with Pelembe,” said Mosimane of his club’s dealings with the Mozambican international over a new contract.
“He’s a good player, a very good footballer but this is about more than that. It’s about business. He is asking for what he feels he deserves but if the club doesn’t meet his demands, what are we going to do.
“There are other good players at Sundowns. We love Pelembe but if he is not going to stay, we’ll miss him but we have to continue.”
Media reports had Pelembe’s last contract valued at R3 million annually, effectively guaranteeing him a monthly salary of R250 000. But this has never been confirmed by either the club or the player.
The dilemma now for Pelembe, known as Dominguez in his home country, is that he is unlikely to get anything approaching the same salary package from another Premier Soccer League clubs, especially after spending most of the season out of favour and on the sidelines.
This campaign, he has started only nine league matches and three in cup competition and scored a single goal.
His chances of similar money in Portugal, which is an attractive alternative for Pelembe, are also slim as he is now 30 years old.
