Ajax happy to let players go to Chan

Ajax Cape Town would be willing to release players to the South Africa squad for the upcoming African Nations Championship tournament, said coach Muhsin Ertugral.
“Our attitude towards the Chan will be that it is a great opportunity for our players to play for Bafana Bafana,” he said as the uncertainty of the quality of South Africa’s selection remained unresolved one month before the tournament kicks off.
“It can only help our players to learn from these kind of games,” Ertugral added.
The statement from the Ajax boss will come as music to coach Gordon Igesund’s ears as he is still to get clarity on whether he can pick the strongest possible squad from the ranks of the Premier Soccer League.
Igesund’s frustration was all too evident recently when reporters quizzed him over just what side he would be able to turn out. He said he was unsure if he would be able to get players from Premier Soccer League club’s.
The PSL last month said that any decision to release players to compete in Chan must be made by the individual clubs.
But because the tournament is not officially sanctioned by Fifa, clubs are under no obligation to release players.
The tournament is for quasi-national teams, made up of home-based players only, and in theory South Africa could field a powerful side and start among the favourites.
As the league will resume after its Christmas and New Year break on January 23, few, if any PSL and National First Division clubs, will be wiling to let players go and join Igesund’s squad.
“We cannot dictate to them,” De Villiers said, adding the league had responsibilities to its broadcast partners and sponsors and could not summarily move its fixtures.
