Juan Carlos Garrido began his Real Betis coaching career with a win as the struggling Spanish league side beat 10-man Lleida to open the last 32 round of the Copa del Rey on Friday.
Betis received the extra man advantage in the fourth minute when goalkeeper Pau Torres was red-carded. His substitute, Fran Perales, saved the ensuing penalty from Jorge Molina.
Joan Verdu scored the next penalty in the 27th to put Betis ahead, and Molina made up for his miss in the 42nd for 2-0.
Despite the disadvantage of surrendering two away goals, Lleida scored through Pere Milla in the 57th to stay in the two-legged series.
Garrido replaced Pepe Mel on Monday with Betis last on the log.
Later on Friday, Barcelona play third-division side Cartagena.
