Mabhuti Khanyeza will today have a scan on his injured knee that Mpumalanga Black Aces fearful he may be out until the New Year, supersport.com can exclusively reveal.
The Mpumalanga Black Aces striker missed Wednesday’s 1-0 Absa Premiership victory over league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after waking up on the morning of the match and feeling the discomfort.
He has now been sent for a scan that will reveal the extent of the problem, but coach Clive Barker fears the news might not be good.
“He just woke up on the morning of the game and said, “my knee doesn’t feel right’,” Barker tells supersport.com. “We tried to give him treatment through the day so that he could play but it wasn’t getting any better.
“He his having a scan today [Thursday] to find out exactly what the problem is. If it needs to be cleaned out then that will keep him out until at least the beginning of January when we come back from the festive season break. It is a big worry.”
Black Aces still have three matches to play before the new year – away at Polokwane City on Sunday, home to Free State Stars on December 14 and away at University of Pretoria on December 22.
The injury to Khenyeza may be ruled academic though with his on-going disciplinary case up in front of arbitrator on December 13, the South African Football Association confirmed this week.
The hearing will come almost four months after the Premier Soccer League referred the matter to arbitration on August 29, following the decision of the SAFA Appeals Board to change his punishment for spitting on a match official from a 12-month ban to a R50 000 fine, half of which was suspended.
Khenyeza was found guilty by the PSL’s disciplinary committee in June of “misbehaviour and unsporting behaviour” for having spat at and verbally insulted linesman Zakhele Siwela after he was sent off late in the game against Mamelodi Sundowns in April while still playing at Ajax Cape Town.
If the arbitrator finds in favour of the PSL, the ban will re instated on Khenyeza and, at the age of 31, likely severely dent his chances of playing at the top level again.
