Sammy Troughton admits his side rode their luck but says University of Pretoria’s battling 2-1 victory over Chippa United has set them up nicely for the challenges ahead.
Chippa had the lion-share of chances, but AmaTuks held out for a precious three points that should give them confidence going into the weekend’s difficult trip to Free State Stars.
Troughton was also in charge of AmaTuks the last time they won at Free State Stars, when both sides campaign in the National First Division in the 2006/07 season.
But he says Tuesday’s successes has lifted the players and although far from the perfect performance, gives them something to build on.
“It’s a big step for us … we put ourselves under pressure, we invited the guys too deep, but we held out in the end,” Troughton said. “It’s not ideal, but sometimes the three points is all that matters.”
He praised his players for their work-rate and commitment shown.
“We said they would have to be committed, going with runners and closing down space. They missed a few chances, Mosadi could have buried it for us when he went through one-on-one with the keeper,” he said.
“We might be fortunate to the three points but we’ll take it.”
Ernst Middendorp, taking charge of Chippa for the first time, praised his side’s performance in the final 60 minutes at least, but says sloppy errors at the back cost them.
“We could not get going in the first 30 minutes, we only started playing after we conceded the first goal,” Middendorp said. “The second half [performance], you can’t complain.
“We deserved something for the way we played for the last 60 minutes in the game, but sometimes it goes like that.”
AmaTuks meet Stars on Saturday afternoon, while Chippa United host Maritzburg United in Port Elizabeth at the same time.
