Clatous Chama provided an assist and scored the second goal with the last kick of the game to help Zesco United to a 2-0 win over Al Ghazala Wau in the Caf Champions League preliminary round first leg on Sunday.
Idriss Mbombo opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a slight touch of the ball from a corner delivered into the box by Chama.
Ben Adama Bahn provided the assist for Chama’s goal.
In a match in which Zesco United dominated the proceedings and played almost the entire match in the Al Ghazala defensive half, the visitors failed to register a single shot on target.
Zesco United coach George Lwandamina told fazfootball.com in a post-match interview that Al Ghazala made it difficult for his team to play.
“They employed defensive tactics so how do you expect players to play. Even if there was enough creativity, there was little space in which to use the creativity itself. It was a very, very tough game; they came and they parked the bus. You cannot talk about creativity. It was just tough. The only goals we could have scored were maybe from afar. If the boys had taken the initiative to shoot from afar, it was going to be a different game altogether,” said Lwandamina.
Meanwhile Al Ghazala assistant coach John Baptist Abakar said his team had hoped for a draw.
“We changed our tactics as early as the 15th minute because if we played an open match it was going to be a big loss. Zesco is a big team and the game we have played with them has given us an idea about them. The second leg is going to be different,” said Abakar.
The second leg will take place at Juba Stadium on February 26.
