The highly anticipated dream of professional football finally came to life over the weekend for the 2015 Nedbank Ke Yona Team captain, Ian Chikohwa after the 20-year-old striker made his Premier Soccer League debut for The University of Pretoria against SuperSport United in the all-important Tshwane Derby.
Chikohwa is one of many youngsters who have benefitted from Nedbank’s innovative talent search initiative that has over the past four years travelled to different parts of the country – resulting in 13 players signing professional contracts with PSL and NFD clubs.
The quick as lightning striker is set to flourish under the leadership of one of the most respected football icons, Shaun Bartlett who was also a prolific striker in his days. Chikohwa is currently on a three-year-deal with AmaTuks after having made an impression during his month long trial at the club. Chikohwa was one of the players who were drafted into a PSL club from the Nedbank 2015 Ke Yona Team. The striker says he is confident that he will grow to become one of the league’s most prized strikers.
“It still felt unreal when I made my debut for the club. What has made it even more special was the fact that it was a Tshwane derby against one of the most respected clubs in the country. Even though the result did not go our way, it was not a true reflection of the game, I thank Nedbank for making this dream a reality” said Chikohwa.
Just like Chikohwa, aspiring footballers are urged to partner with Nedbank and make their dreams happen with the upcoming Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search.
The 2016 edition of the Ke Yona Team Search will, once again, take place in five different provinces under the auspices of Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, Owen Da Gama, Khabo Zondo and Mike Mangena.
