Ernst Middendorp says one of the biggest threats facing his Maritzburg United side in the tension they feel going into each Absa Premiership match.
The KwaZulu-Natal side are currently propping up the top division with just nine points gained from 18 games so far.
The team rallied for a 1-1 draw at home to Platinum Stars this past weekend, but draws will not be enough to keep them up and Middendorp is aware they need to start winning.
But that desire to be successful also creates tension, which has manifested itself on the pitch.
“It is not unusual to be tense, having lost the last three games. Knowing that you need a win,” Middendorp said.
“The team deserved a positive result [against Stars]. Coming back from 0-1, we kept the structure, some good moments in the second half with shots where I would say if they could have been on target, then there would have been no chance for the goalkeeper.
“Not everything is going well as we planned, as we asked for, as I think is possible with the team. But we have to take it and prepare for our next game in Bloemfontein [on Sunday].”
United have just a single victory this season , achieved away at University of Pretoria, and are four points from the relative safety of the relegation play-off position.
They are now eight points back from Jomo Cosmos in absolute safety, though they do have a game in hand.
