Ajax Cape Town must learn to finish off matches when they get chances to score otherwise face the possibility of continuing to drop points warned coach Roger de Sa.
“It’s been very frustrating to see how many chances we have been wasting,” he said after Ajax scrapped out a narrow 1-0 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows at home at the weekend.
“We were lucky that we go away with it against Arrows but in the last couple of games when we missed opportunities, we got punished.
“This time round we missed the easiest chance of the game (Bantu Mzwakali one-on-one with the opposing goalkeeper in the closing stages) and straight after that Mabhuti (Khenyeza) missed their best chance of the game. We could easily have been punished for it. Luckily we got away with it but usually we don’t.
"Last week against Chippa we were 1-0 up and then there was a very easy chance for Prince (Nxumalo) to tap it home one metre from goal but he hand balled it. From then on we went and lost the game. We keep doing that. It’s an area we have to learn to close the game off,” added De Sa.
“It’s something that the top teams do. We have to get that mettle to seal the game off. Hopefully the payers will learn and get better.”
Victory for Ajax on Friday night was only their second success in their last 11 games but it did lift them three places up the Premier Soccer League standings.
