Zambia U23 and Nchanga Rangers coach Fighton Simukonda died on Monday morning at Konkola Mine Hospital in Chililabombwe.
The veteran coach passed on the day he was to celebrate his 58th birthday after a long battle with illness.
Immediate former Nchanga Rangers president Blackwell Siwale confirmed Simukonda’s death to fazfootball.com.
“Sad moment for football Coach Fighton Simukonda died this morning at Konkola Mine Hospital,” said Siwale.
Simukonda had been in hospital since December 12 after returning from Senegal with the Zambia under-23 national team at the 2015 Caf Under-23 Africa Cup. He was being treated for diabetes that was exacerbated by a foot wound but was discharged on January 29 only to be admitted a week later.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Kalusha Bwalya said he was sad to learn of Simukonda’s death.
“I am sad to hear the passing of coach Fighton Simukonda. He was a sincere and dedicated man. May his soul rest in peace,” said Kalusha.
The multiple title winning former defender won five league championships as a player with Nkana and as a coach won the league twice with Zanaco and once with Zesco United.
He made 36 appearances for the Zambia national football team, scoring once. As national team coach he won the Cosafa Cup as Zambia in 1998 beating hosts Zimbabwe 1-0 in the final.
