Masibusane Zongo is likely to get more game time tonight after making his return to the game for the first time in two years last week as Platinum Stars seek to test his ability to stay the course.
The crafty winger came on for the last nine minutes of the Premier Soccer League fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns last week and almost scored a last gasp winner in a 1-1 draw at Atteridgeville and is in line to get more game time when Stars take on AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Wednesday night.
“I’ve watched Zongo before and I’ve always spoken to other people about him he’s a good player. But you’re only really able to tell a player’s mentality when he is really in the right competition,” said Stars’ new coach Cavin Johnson.
Zongo, who is now 25, was a teenage prodigy at SuperSport United but failed to progress because of frequent bouts of alcohol abuse, which eventually led to his being released from subsequent contracts with Vasco da Gama, Bidvest Wits, Blackburn Rovers in the National First Division and Chippa United.
Stars are the latest side to taken a gamble on his ability to stay sober and focus on his career with Johnson positive about the prospects.
“I thought he would do against Sundowns what he does in training, but he did a little bit better. He looked more positive on the ball, he didn’t lose it which was satisfying for me because at training he was losing it sometimes and he showed that there is a lot more professionalism in him than we give him credit for,” Johnson added.
“I hope he can be a factor next season. Again, the ball is in his court, I like to do that now. Zongo has had time on the pitch, now it is up to Zongo to see how far he can take it. Can he play 20 minutes, can he add 45 minutes, maybe a full game? That’s up to Zongo now.”
