The Klassiker between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, like any other derby, was full of drama but it also taught us a few things.
Dortmund beat Bayern 3-1 on penalties to progress to the DFB Pokal final in Berlin. The two teams were tied at 1-1 at fulltime and could not be separated in extra time, meaning the match had to be settled via a dreaded penalty shootout.
The rivalry is undoubted but, at the end of it all, football is but just a game and it’s imperative to still show respect to your opposition, regardless of the result.
Supersport.com picked up a few pointers from the two Bundesliga giants that other teams can learn from.
HAWK-EYED REF
Despite all the noise made about the need for technology in football, humans can still make the right decisions without the aid of devices. BVB’s equalising goal against Bayern looked unclear at first glimpse but the assistant referee raised his flag confidently from the moment Manuel Neuer pulled the ball back from over the line.
In recent times, referees have been criticised for their decisions and we also have to praise them when they get something difficult right. After all, they have a split second to make a decision without the benefit of a replay. Hats off to the flag-and-whistle-men.
Coaches, when a decision doesn’t go your way, it doesn’t mean you have to kick coolers or water bottles. There are better ways of managing your frustrations and Bayern coach Pep Guardiola thinks a hug is all you need sometimes.
PASSION PERSONIFIED
No matter which team you support, somehow you will always fall in love with Dortmund and it’s all because of the love and passion displayed by their fans and outgoing manager Klopp. The BVB boss celebrates all the good moments in fine style. Some say he is probably quicker than Usain Bolt.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Fifa’s Fair Play insists on respect for your opponents despite the outcome of the match and Klopp proved that, even though winning a derby is exciting, you still have to shake hands. It might seem like a small and meaningless gesture but it’s actually a massive gesture made in the spirit of fair play and mutual respect.
