Born in Umtata in the Eastern Cape on the 27 August 1998, Khanyisa was welcomed into a soccer loving family. His father Patrick achieved 18 caps for South Africa and scored six goals.
Khanyisa’s brother, Khanyisile, born 11 September 2000 is also at the academy and looking to achieve great things. It’s little wonder then that the boy’s parents are huge supporters of their soccer and watch them whenever possible.
As striker, wearing jersey number 21 for the Supersport United Reserves team and number 17 for the under-17 national side, Khanyisa says his favourite overseas player is Belgian Eden Hazard who plays for Chelsea FC as well as the Belgium national team.
The Grade 11 Holy Trinity pupil states tourism as his favourite subject and says that the advantage of being on school holidays as he is now is that he gets to train twice a day.
His best tournament to date was this year’s international u17 tournament where South Africa placed second to Mali. In terms of his goals for the remainder of this year, he wants to perform well for the academy and ensure that they are ranked as the best academy in the country. In terms of the national team, his goal is to win the under-17 World Cup in October 2015 in Chile.
At only 17 years of age, this promising youngster has 14 caps and 7 goals for the under-17 national team and is currently the team’s highest goal scorer. Thanks to the opportunities that the Supersport United Youth Academy sponsored by Phumelela has given him, we may well be seeing more of Khanyiso Mayo in the future.
