Gyan could still play in the semifinal

Africa Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea may yet have to deal with the challenge of Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, with the striker set to undergo a late fitness test ahead of tonight’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinal.
The 29-year-old is struggling with an injury he picked up after suffering a brutal challenge in the Black Stars’ 3-0 win over Guinea in the quarterfinals.
Gyan only returned from Mongomo – where he was flown to undergo further examinations on his injury – on Tuesday afternoon and has since not trained with the side.
Various reports suggests the prolific Al Ain ace will play no part in the semifinal clash against the tournament hosts.
But Ghana assistant coach Maxwell Konadu says there is still a possibility the inspirational attacker could play in Thursday’s clash if he passes a late fitness test.
“Gyan is so important to this team and we always wish he could take part [in the game against Equatorial Guinea],” he said.
“We are not ruling him out yet but we’ll see how it goes [on Thursday].”
The assistant Black Stars trainer says the team is equipped with competent players to step up should Gyan remain unavailable.
“But just in case he [Gyan] cannot make it, we’ve been there before,” he added.
“We’ve played matches that he wasn’t part of the team and yet still the rest of the guys played out their hearts and got us this far.
“So yes, it is good, he is important for Ghana but without him Ghana has to learn to move on.”
