Rwanda launch nationwide U15 league

Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) has launched a nationwide under-15 league in both the girls and boys categories.
The inaugural competition has attracted a total of 73 teams, including 21 girls’ teams and 52 boys’ teams in the first phase in four districts, including Gatsibo (Eastern Province), Kicukiro (City of Kigali), Nyanza (Southern Province) and Rulindo (Northern Province).
The league will take place throughout the year, with the first phase running for four months.
Ferwafa technical director Lee Johnson said: “This is a step in the right direction for football in Rwanda for both boys and girls and it will lay the foundations to build on future activities and other leagues.”
Johnson, who coached at Chelsea and Crystal Palace as a youth football academy coach, added: “We are looking to introduce under-13s during the course of this year so it will provide a lot more opportunities for players to play in a competitive environment which they haven’t had an opportunity to do before.”
In June, the under-15 league will cover another four districts including Nyarugenge (City of Kigali), Musanze (Northern Province), Nyamagabe (Southern Province) and Kayonza (Eastern Province) for four months as well.
From October till end of January 2016, the under-15 league will be played in Gasabo (City of Kigali), Nyabihu (Western Province), Rusizi (Western Province) and Rwamagana (Eastern Province).
The competition will cover Gicumbi (Northern Province), Rulindo (Northern Province), Huye (Southern Province) and Nyagatare (Eastern Province) from February 2016 for three months.
This is the first time Rwanda is organising youth football leagues across the country, an initiative started by Johnson in a bid to increase the number of young players in both the boys’ and girls’ categories across the country.
