Gicumbi goalkeeper Tresor Delphin Musikila Tchomba scored the only goal as his side defeated on-form AS Kigali on Wednesday in a tense National Football League encounter.
The Congolese custodian converted from the spot in the first half after AS Kigali defender Latif Bishira was punished for a handball in the penalty box to grant Gicumbi a match-winning opportunity.
Efforts by striker Ernest Sugira to equalise for AS Kigali were saved by Tchomba whose alertness and good decision making was important for his side’s victory.
“It is unfortunate that we lost this game because we did everything we could to win, but in the end we lost. We shall go back and work on our mistakes and hope to win our next game,” Sugira said.
This win sends Gicumbi into eighth position on the table standings with 16 points tied with Sunrise (+3), Amagaju (0), Marines (-1) and SC Kiyovu (-6) with only goal difference separating the five clubs.
In November, Gicumbi shocked table leaders APR following a 1-0 result to hand the army side their first and only loss this season.
In the other game of the day, Kiyovu held Sunrise FC to a 1-1 draw at the Mumena stadium. Vedaste Niyibizi opened the scoring before Baby Miamy Mbakiye scored his sixth goal this season to help Ali Bizimungu’s side secure a point.
Mbakiye is the top scorer so far ahead of Bienvenue Mugenzi of Marines who has netted five times this season. Peter Otema (Rayon Sports) and Patrick Munyankindi (Sunrise) have scored four goals.
Since the 2-2 draw against Rayon Sports in November, Kiyovu has failed to win a league game following a 1-0 loss to Espoir, goalless draw against Gicumbi and recently a 5-0 thrashing by table leaders APR.
Despite the poor run of results, Bizimungu believes that his side will improve ahead of the last game of the first round against AS Kigali.
